Greetings from Canada. I am searching for any information about the marriage of Francis George HOLT to Jane GILBERT (possibly Juana GILIBERTO) in Adelaide between the years of 1853 and 1868. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Optimisst

Hi Optimisst,
A Big Welcome to RootsChat :D
Just wondering what leads you to believe the marriage was in South Australia. I am not spotting a marriage nor any births or deaths to this couple in SA. :'(
Cheers Kris :)

Thankyou for your welcome, Kris. I found a reference on GeneaNet indicating that they were married in Adelaide Australia between 1831 and 1916. Francis was born in England about 1831, according to this reference, and Jane was born in Cape Horn about 1836. I believe Francis arrived in Australia on the "Marion (Marian) Moore) in 1854. He died in New Zealand in 1916 and Jane died there in 1918. The first child for whom I can find a birth reference was born in New Zealand in 1868.
Thanks again

Hi Optimisst,
Yes I found the same tree information myself on world connect as well. (same poster) I noted a NZ birth lists her as Jane Emma, but it has not helped. There is no record of this couple in SA. If the arrival of Francis in Vic on the Marian Moore is your man, he was aged 22. He seems to have travelled with Robert HOLT aged 26 (ref B 064 003)
I would suggest the tree owner does not seem to know a lot about this couple. Other members will be able to perform a better search of Victorian Records than I am able to provide.
Cheers Kris :)

Hi Optimisst :)
I have searched the Victorian marriages indexes for the period with a nil result. Wonder if it is worth contacting the submitter of the data on Worldconnect?
Love your username ;)
Cheers

Jane Gilbert hooked up with a man calling himself William Richards in Melbourne (AU) in 1859, (but no marriage as far as can be found). They lived together there for about 4 years. He then enlisted in the First Regiment Waikato Militia in1863 and went to New Zealand on the 'Star of India' and served in No. 6 Company. Jane came to New Zealand with wives of the members of the regiment on the "Swiftsure" in 1864, with their two children Elizabeth and John. They were based at Gate Pa in Tauranga. He deserted her and went to Auckland reverting to his real name - William Henry Walker. Most of this information is in a Declaration with a Justice of the Peace made by Willaim Walker 1/12/1882. It was in Tauranga that Jane met Robert Holt. (No record of that marriage either). Their first son, Francis Robert Holt, was born in Tauranga, in 1868. They must have moved to Auckland by 1870 because their seond child Emma Lucy was born there. Their 3rd, 4th and 5th children were born in Tapu, near Thames in 1873, 1877, and 1880. (Mary, David and Rose) Jane Gilbert was my Great, great grandmother. Some other clever person has unearthed and verified a good deal of this information. I am not sure of Jane's birth details, It is possible that she was born at sea. There was a Jane Catherine Gilbert born on the barque 'Lloyds' off Cape Horn 24 August 1838. The birth was registered in Adelaide 27/1/1839. So far I haven't been able to connect this Jane Gilbert to Robert Holt's Jane Gilbert who also called herself Sophia Jane Gilbert and Emily Jane Gilbert (on birth certificates of her children). William Richards/Walker deserted a first wife in Adelaide and then went to Melbourne - its possible he and Jane travelled from Adelaide to Melbourne together?

I'm very interested to know where the idea of "possibly Juana GILIBERTO" came from. My aunt said there was a spanish connection in the family - but she was pretty absentminded by the time I talked to her about it.

I too wondered about the name, Juana GILIBERTO, but couldn’t find any other connecting references to it.
Regards, Jamjar.

If the daughter is Elizabeth Jane Richards, born 1861, her mother’s name is recorded as Catherine Jane. John Thomas Richards has mother as a Jane.
