My G G Grandfather joined the Army in 1854 when he was 18. The first posting that I can find was in Ballincollig, Co.Cork. Unfortunately I have no info. about his Regiment. He married while he was there and about 1863 he was transferred to England. He returned to Ballincollig in 1867 where my G Grandmother Elizabeth was born {13/1/1868] Between 1869 and 1875 he served in Ahmenabad, Maharastra India where his daughter Margaret was born [ 14/5/1871 ]. On completion of 20 years service in 1874 he returned to live and work in Govan ,Glasgow before coming to N. Ireland sometime between 1881 and 1890.His name was Edward McDonnell and his wife was Margaret Ambrose. Can anyone give me a push in any direction to find out more. I should have asked for anything about regiments, passenger arrivals around 1874 or any advice. Thanks in advance for any replies.

You need someone with a Findmypast account who can do regimental BMDs searches. The regiment is given in the index. You will have to order one though as they sometimes made a mistake with the indexing.
You will not find things such as passenger lists. While he was in the army they had no need of passenger lists as they would have daily roll calls, and there have never been passenger lists for travel within the British Isles.
From the detailed information you have I am surprised you haven't found his regiemnt.

Ken, Many thanks for the prompt reply.I'll see what I can turn up armed with this info. I thought perhaps that if his engagement finished in India then his wife and family might have been transported back home on a passenger liner. What do you think???

Since the first post Findmypast have put an index of all serving soldiers for 1861. It is worth checking this in case there were several man with the same name.
Plus there are more Irish BMD records online now.

hi,,the original image of Margarets baptisms confirms her father as being a gunner sergeant in the Royal Artillery. The family were residing at camp Ahmerabad at the time.
