Title: Joseph Coe Cordwainer Little St Martins St London
Post by: MaureenK on Friday 21 March 08 15:41 GMT (UK)
1798 Joseph Coe married Elizabeth Skinner at St Mary's Bury St Edmunds Suffolk
1814 Joseph Coe described as Gentleman at baptism of son Charles Skinner Coe in St Martin in Fields Baptisms
register. Address 1 Little St Martins Street.
1818 Joseph Coe described as Cordwainer at Baptism of son Joseph in St Martins in Field (same address)

At this stage I am stumped................can find NO more info on Joseph senior or wife Elizabeth or any further offspring if indeed there were any.

The Charles Skinner and Joseph jnr are well documented.

Can anyone help please?

Hi MaureenK

As a Cordwainer is a shoemaker it may be possible he had a little shop?

May be worth looking in the trade directories (if there any for that time) for that area?

Just might help to approach it from a different angle.

Thanks Su

I will try that. I have this infuriating gap!!  Guess we all go through it.

In later years Charles and his sons Charles and Thomas were Boot and Shoe manufacturers in Oxford Street .

Later they moved to Bristol..... same trade..... employing 150 men and boys.

Oh Wow

Thats a great story!

I have gaps too, the hardest work but you feel real good when you do!

One of my family was a Cordwainer from Coverack, we still have one of the shoelasts in the family :D

The fact that it only mentions Elizabeth could perhaps indicate that Joseph had died............
the male Coe's just after this time mostly died before 60.....so maybe !!!!!!!!!!
The puzzle continues......
