Title: Foster Family - Deal
Post by: peejayess on Sunday 12 April 09 09:29 BST (UK)

I have an Eliza Foster who was christened in Deal on 8th Jan 1823 (IGI). Her father was Henry Foster and Ann Foster (maiden name unknown).

I am keen to understand whether this is sufficient for any one to be able to look up in Deal Parish records for the marriage of Henry and Ann and any other available information.

I am a "newbie" when it comes to what is available from Parish records and how and where these can be viewed.

Thanks

Pete

Hi Pete, welcome to RootsChat :)

Deal PRs are available on film in Deal library.

I have some Baptisms for St George's, 1781-1822.
Henry & Ann had several children baptised, details if you want them.
One child had the middle name of Hayman, which could be Ann's maiden name, although it could be a surname from further back.
Henry was a Mariner & they lived in Lower Street.

Hi Betty

Thanks for the reply and the information.

I would like to see the details that you have already from the ST Georges records.

Do you know if you have to book a "slot" to view the film records.

Thanks

Pete

Hi Pete

I've never needed to book a viewer in my local library, but if there isn't one free it doesn't matter, as I can go in anytime.  If you are travelling to Deal then it would be best to book, otherwise you might find it's a busy day & you've had a wasted journey.

St George's Deal
Baptisms of the children of Henry & Ann FOSTER

1817 5th March   Henry
1819 1st January  Amy
1821 7th February  Ann Hayman
The Notes for all three say -
Lower St. Mariner. Rev M P

There are two more for a Henry & Ann FORSTER.
This could well be the same couple, as this Henry is also a Mariner of Lower Street. It's two different vicars, so the surname could have easily been misheard.

1814 15th Jun  William Oatridge
Notes: born 15th May 1815. Lower St. Mariner. Rev P E
1815 28th July Mary Ann
Notes: Lower St. Mariner. Rev C F

At least now you have a start date for a Marriage, possibly about 1813 if this is all the same couple, or about 1816.

I notice one of your names is SPAIN.
Where are they from?

Betty

Hi Pete

My Spains are from Walmer, with one exception.
I've gone back as far as Thomas Spain, born c1791 in Canterbury. I've found a possible Baptism for 23rd July 1790, parents Thomas & Sarah.

I've only recently discovered Phil Spain's site, I haven't had chance to have a good dig around on there yet, but it looks interesting.
