Title: Bolger from Ferns
Post by: jkirwan on Sunday 12 April 09 09:03 BST (UK)
Seeking information on James Bolger from Newtown/Coolbawn area - born approx. 1827 (aged 74 on 1901 census).  I don't know his wife's name.  He was a carpenter, and had a son Joseph Bolger, who married Sarah Ryan 7.11.1907 in Ferns.  They had 5 children - James b. 1907, Annie (Nan) b.1908, Bridie b. 1912, Lizzie b. 1915 and Michael b. 1918.
James married twice - he was in Irish army, Nan married a Paddy McMahon and moved to Mountrath, Co.Laois, Bridie married ?Fortune (in British army) and moved to England, Lizzie married Joe Kirwan, and Michael never married.
Any information or connections gratefully received.

JKirwan, have you got the birth records for each of these people as it appears you have listed nick names rather than actual birth names? Im not having a go or anything but just suggesting these names are not what you would expect to find on the Birth or baptism records. The Irish GRO [just google it] will have most of the births for the names... you would be best to use the LDS site for the refrence details [google family search]

Also im curious/interested was Joseph who maried Sarah Ryan actually born Just joseph or was he James Joseph? Same goes for the father?

Bridie who married ? Fortune in british army and moved to england.... do you know when they married [approximate year] and in which country?

Last thing Lizzie i assume is your gt Grandmother [Elizabeth?] if so that may be where the names and dates stem from.... if so [and i assume is possibly no longer with us?] it provides you a lot to start with.... But you will need to trace these people and obtain a copy of the birth and marriage certs to start your trace.

Good Hunting

Kebholes, I don't have birth cert for James Bolger c 1827, as GRO records don't go back this far.  I have birth cert for Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bolger, and father's name is given as Joe on cert.  Re. Joseph B who married Sarah Ryan - mcert says just Joseph, with father's name James.  I don't know when Bridget Bridie got married, or where.

I presume this is the family in the 1911 Census

Joseph Bolger & Sarah 1911 Census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Wexford/Ferns/Milltown_Road/678143/)

Based on traditional naming rules. It is likely that Joseph Bolger parents were James and Annie/Anne.

Then on www.familysearch.org

There is a Joseph Bolger born 1865 to James Bolger & Anne Murphy in Ferns, Wexford

This would make his age in census slightly wrong but was usual for ages to be off sometimes.

Julia, Just found listing in Despatches that might be useful...

February 27th 1875
Supplement to the london Gazette

Bolger, David  -  Miltown Ferns, County Wexford  -  Manufacturer

Bolger David and margaret his Wife -  Miltown Ferns, County Wexford

You may want to get their marriage cert as it certainly places them in the right place and time for your family.

Hi, do you know whereabouts in Wexford? - or when they married?  Any more info would be gratefully received.  I'm off to Wexford on Friday to try to get some more leads.  Many thanks, Julia

Hi Julia ive been checking the records and what these details appear to be is the modern equivalant of company registration returns. I have found so many of them for this same couple with all the same details just different years starting 1869 and ending in 1887.

I dont know how well you know the area but there is a family history centre in "Yola Farmstead, Folk Park, Tagoat, Rosslare, Co. Wexford" but when i was over at the end of november begining of December it was closed.... not sure if this is permanant or seasonal?

Hopefully someone on here might have more upto date information to help you...

Also the National achieves in Dublin has an in house team of geneologists and they are great although you will have to que and it is busy, about a 5 minute walk takes you to the national library and again they are so helpfull and waiting time for the microfishe is less than 10 minutes.

Good Luck

Mick

If you're planning to visit the NAI you might check this link and give them a call to make sure the records will be available:
