Title: Stewkley - HALL, DICKINS/DICKENS Families
Post by: Lisa1975 on Saturday 11 April 09 20:24 BST (UK)
Hi, after a lovely visit to Stewkley today, i thought i'd post on here in the hope of getting in contact with some distant relatives  :)

I have the surnames, Hall and Dickins in my tree. Dickins has been spelt as Dickens on some records so i'm not 100% which is correct.

These are the names i have so far:

Great x3 Grandfather Caleb Hall b. 1821 Drayton Parslow - married Ann Griffin b.1825 Stewkley

Children of Caleb and Ann (only confirmed by census/BMD records - all born in Stewkley)
Henry b. 1846
Rebecca b. 1848
Alfred b. 1850
Selina b. 1852
Caleb b. 1854
Mary b. 1856
Frederic b. 1858
Ellen b. 1860
Elisabeth b. 1862
Richard b. 1864 - My Great x 2 Grandfather
Charles b. 1866

Richard John Hall b, 1864 married Emily Dickins b.1873 (both born in Stewkley) Emily i believe was the daughter of John Dickins and Elizabeth Roads (still to be confrimed by birth cert) John Dickins later married Ann Wesley after Elizabeth died in 1875.

Richard and Emily's children
William b. 1894 - My Great Grandfather
May b. 1904
Ethel b. 1905
Ivy b. 1909

If any of these names ring a bell, pease get in touch  :)

  Hello Lisa ....

Welcome to the family . Hope you got my pm?
Stewkley as you say is a lovely place...I can walk around the village and pinpoint places that "our" large family lived in and near.
I live close to Stewkley still ( Milton Keynes) I can look up Emily Dickins birth for you when the children go back to school in a week if you can wait ( save you some money) as our library in MK has a great family history dept and they have the records on film.
Minnie I believe is the daughter of Rebecca who was " housekeeper" to Edwin Dick Capp the carpenter part of the now undertakers family also in the family in 1881 are
Albertina Jane aged 8 Barnet Edwin aged 3 & Sabbatina Richard C Hall aged 1. Edwin & Rebecca marry in 1884.
Let me know if you would like more lookups before I go.

Hi Tazzie, thanks for the pm.

Are you on Ancestry?  If so, i'll upload my tree for you.

I only found out about the Stewkley connection when the 1911 census was released as it was always a mystery where my Great Grandfather William was from. William died in 1982 and there's only my Great Uncle Richard still alive and he didn't know where his Father was born or his Grandparents names on the Hall side so we hit a bit of a dead end.

It was only when i ordered a copy of my Grandparents marriage certificate that we realised they were married in Stewkley (at St Michaels) and Grandad was living at 26 Ivy Lane at the time of his marriage. (no'26 is no longer standing  :( )

If you could check on Emily's birth that would be brilliant thankyou. I have worldwide Ancestry subscription if i can do any look-ups for you to return the favour.

Keep in touch  :)

Hi Matt, the furthest i have gone back is John Hall born c.1786 in Drayton Parslow and he was married to Rebecca ?  Will keep checking to see if Susanna is linked somewhere along the line

   Hi Lisa....

I am a member of Ancestry but not a subscriber at the moment...

Some bits to be going on with..

  Henry ...have not yet traced
  Rebecca.... see above
Alfred m Elizabeth Wenman Alfred dies age 31 1887
  Selina m William Rowe 1871
  Caleb yet to trace
  Mary A ... m Thomas Mead             Elizabeth a visitor in 1881.
Frederick Hall m Elziabeth Numan need to check dates from file.
  Ellen   still to follow
  Elizabeth my line
  Richard ...yours :)
  Charles yet to follow.

Going back I found a bapt for  a John Hall to father William Hall & Ann nee Willison in D/P records.
William was son of William & Esther nee Bedford
Ann was daughter of John Willison & Elizabeth HALL  ( sister to William above)
So they appear to be cousins.

   Hi Lisa....

Could not look at the marriage in the PR's as they only go up to 1887 in our library so could not confirm which Emily she was.

Did marry off another couple though ....

Henry marries Rhoda Sinfield in 1871  and by 1881 has 3 children Clara 6 Ernest 4 & Horace 1.
  Amy Ellen marries Timothy Twist.

Got Frederick wrong..... he married Jane jones daughter of Henry a watchmaker
& Charles later marries Emma Jane Newman.

Caleb b 1854 I cannot see in 1881 but a death in 1882 is right for his birth year so a mystery still there.

Our local has all parish records for Stewkley  BAPT  up to 1847
                                                                           Marr up to 1887
                                                                            Bur  up to 1868.
The others I think may be found at Aylesbury but I rarely get over that way.
Let me know if I can help further.

  Hi ...

Sorry for late reply but have not been around to answer any questions for a while.

I have not looked futher into The Rowe family as Elizabeth Hall 1862 daughter of Caleb & Ann is hubbies great grandmother so have kept the line direct and have not looked further only to confirm the marriages of the siblings above. Now back to full fitness I maybe able to look further via the records held in Milton Keynes if there is someone in particular  as they hold copies of parish records.

Let me know what more you would like to know and I'll get back to you.

I have a hyper almost 11 year old who refuses to go to bed until 11:23pm as that's when he officially becomes 11.

Hi Tazzie

Lovely to hear form someone so soon especially as this is a bit of an old thread.  Found it in a google search!!
I've only just started getting into this 'hobby' and am amazed at what I've found so far!!  My sister in law started it off so I can't lay claim to most of the research but have already found new 'third cousins'

Caleb and Ann also my GG Grandparents, I decend from the eldest son Charles.  Charles was born in Stewkley 1866 and his son Herbert (my grandfather) was born in London.  Would be interested to know when Charles came to London if you have any info on that.  Furthest back I can go is to Edward Hall 1691, bell founder (continuing the business from Chandler Family) with his son William.
Any info on or prior to this would also be appreciated.

thanks

  Hello....

Wow you've gone a lot further than I have on this side yet.
Am I right so far I have Caleb who parents are John Hall & Rebecca Bull.
John's parents  William Hall & Ann Willison who married 1781
William's parents William Hall & Esther Bedford who married 1745.

As you can see this is were I am up to until I can back to Milton Keynes after the Christmas holidays to start my look ups again. I had spent time looking into the whereabouts of Calebs children and marrying them all off.

Back when I can find more.

I'm only one generation further back than what you have.  I have father of William Hall I -Edward Hall (1691-1755)(Bell founder)  m 1) Mary Simpson (b 1691)  and 2) Elizabeth ? 1696-1734.  This information gathered from another cousin??

Poor old bellfounder

Good luck in your searching

  Hi Lesley...

William Hall b 1717 son of Edward Hall & Elizabeth.
So if the Edward who marries Mary Simpson in 1741 & also Elizabeth Chandler in 1753 is the same one  it does not say in the transcription pages... I wonder if anything on the originals will have to have a look.

Edward b 1691 cannot see as Drayton Parslow nor can I see marriage to an Elizabeth before first child in Drayton 1714...... more thinking out loud here than anything so will see what I can find.

  Cheers

Hello all

Newbie here.

I have been trying in vain for ages to find how I am related to the Dickens family.

Somebody on here has been very helpful to me today - and given me lots of information.

I have a photograph of my mum and me with Annie Dickens taken in Hereford in 1982, when I was 16.
