Post by: diedraebarb on Saturday 11 April 09 15:41 BST (UK)
Hi there

I am wanting to find out who the parents of my grandfather and grandmother were.  My grandfather was Sidney Wewege born 1914 in East London.  My gran was Olive Charlotte Johanneson born 1916 East London,  I have tried to use Ancestry 24 but no such luck as neither of them appear there.

Please could you Help.

Dee

Yip, He is my grandfather.  He died in 1971 this was before i was born and my father did not speak about his parents so i have no idea about their parents or if they all originated from East London SA.

Hello Diedraebarb and Hepburn (who has been such a great help to you!)

Just a thought Diedraebarb, have you Olive Charlotte's surname correct?  'Johanneson'?  I ask because, some of my relatives are Scandinavian and spread throughout SA, and I was born and lived there many years.     8)

Whilst we were growing up in the then Natal, our parents had Johansson and Johanssen friends.  Do you think Olive may have been from Norway or Sweden, or of either of those, extraction?    ???

Cheers

Hi Danchaslyn   :)

That idea could be a possibility, but my father never spoke of his parents when i was growing up. I never met them as they both died before i was born.   The spelling could also be Johannessen but not sure.

Thanks to both of you for the Help...  Looks as though i will need to try and get a copy of their birth certif.

Dee :)

Hi Dee

Keep in touch and let me know when you get the certificate, what the surname is.........I had ancestors who arrived from Norway, by ship, obviously, in the late 19th Century, to South Africa, and might be able to steer you in the direction of some folk in SA who might be able to help you, especially, if they were missionaries?    ???

It would such a help if you could find out your grandfather's occupation and his father's occupation?  Is your Dad around still?  Is it possibly to approach any other relative and ask what you need to know?    ???

Cheers

My Gran, Alice Frances Green then Bowles (born Pachonik) used to have dear friends and nearby neighbours by the surname Wewege when she lived at 72 Hood Street, West Bank, East London in the 1950's and 1960's. I remember the name well because it was so strange. Unfortunately my Gran is longer alive so I can't find out anything for you. Just thought I'd pass on this little snippet. Perhaps one of my elderly aunts knows something so I'll ask. If I don't come back to you, then you know they couldn't tell me anything more about the Weweges.

Hi there

East London & Frontier Red Book 1914:
East London:
Wewege, A, Saddler, 1 & 2 Hill's Rooms, Fuller's Lane (upper)
Wewege, J, S.A.R., 82 St James' Road   [S.A.R. = South African Railways]

Johansen, O, Storeman, 83 St James' Road
Johansen, O, Bookkeeper, 24 de Villiers Street
Johansen, C.J., Accountant, 6 King Street

Johannsen, G., Seaman, 49 Frere Street

[Too much of a coincidence surely - neighbours!   The different spellings of the surname is as it appears in the records]

East Bank Cemetery, East London:
Johannsen, Gertrud, died 2/11/1941, born 12/1/1888, wife of Otto Heinrich Johannsen
Johannsen, Otto Heinrich, died 30/6/1927, born 18/4/1884, born in Hamburg, Germany & wife Gertrud

Wewege, Angelina, died 2/3/1974. born 10/10/1888, wife
Wewege, Arthur, died 25/2/1930, born 11/6/1921
Wewege, August, died 13/5/1949, born 1/4/1884, and wife Angelina Wewege
Wewege, Daphne, died 27/11/1949, born 30/8/1916, dght of August & Angelina Wewege
Wewege, Henry, died 17/3/1965, born 28/12/1905

[I only have access to the written records for  this cemetery - there are other cemeteries in EL.  Maybe you can look on the eGSSA site - gravestones in South Africa - Eastern Cape - East London.   These are fairly recent photos so many of the gravestones may already be missing].

Good luck
Regards
Sandy
