HELP!
Thanks to the 1911 census I have just established that my gr.grandfather was John Toyne born in Richard Street, Birmingham 1888. Unfortunately I cannot find him on either 1891 or 1901 census. Can anyone tell me what 'Piece/Folio' reference Richard St would come under for either census??
I've tried general searches on name variations without any success.
Thanks

is he with parents in 1911 ?
you can search the 1901 by address - http://www.1901censusonline.com/
let me have any more details and I'll see if he can be teased out in 1901 w/o reverting to paying the 1901 people ...

Theres only one Brum related family of Toynes in 1901 - all born in Brum, but residing in Northfield, Worcs .....
looks like they were Foynes in 1891 - and some BMD entries are also spelled thus .... for that family.
Your man has a BMD Birth Index entry, you might have to get his Birth Cert ....
Births Mar 1888
TOYNE John Aston v6d p293

1901 Richard Street is RG13/2870 enumeration district 31 fol. 148 starting abt p.21
but can't see any Toynes

Thanks both for replying.
I don't have any other details other than John Toyne was born in 1888, on the 1911 census he gives his place of birth as Richard St, Birmingham. His birth was registered in the Aston district (found his birth record on freebmd). I have enough info to order his birth certificate but would love to find him on the census with any brothers or sisters. I'm now trying surnames beginning with f - just in case his name has been mis-transcribed. I know on ancestry you can search by district on the census - but I can't read the 'district' descriptions to identify which district Richard Street fits into (and there are lots of districts!).
Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Ecneps - I'm heading to 'ancestry' now for a look.

best to leave the surname out completely and use DoB / PoB - I have just done this ...... it isnt revealing owt obvious.
The other possibility is that his mother remarried, or that he was brought up by relatives.

what was his occupation in 1911 ?

Well I've been through all the pages for Richard Street 1891 and 1901, no Toynes, (or variations) that I can see, so I think the birth cert is going to be the best next step, then you'll have a bit more information, hopefully

In 1911 he was a Street Hawker on Steel House Lane. I assume that 10 years previous (aged 13) he would probably still be at school.
I have tried every variation of Toyne (Toin, Foyne, Foin, even sounding out with a Dudley type accent!) without success.
I'll definitely order the birth certificate - at least I should then have three names to look at!
Thanks again for eveyone's help/suggestions.

not necessarily still at school - look at the census generally to see what went on !
sorry you've got to resort to the Cert, but I suspected it might be one of those !
Good luck, and keep us posted :)
