After details on Stephen William Wornes or Warnes. Born 1856, he said Adelaide on his marriage certificate. Mother Susannah Wornes, this is her maiden name, father William Wornes. Mother was in Tasmania for some time previous to this, father was a convict, I think there may have been a few fibs told in this family to avoid telling about the father.

No birth reg for a Stephen William WORNES/WARNES on the SA Indexes around 1856. Of course his birth may not have been registered. Civil reg only commenced in 1855 and I think there was a fine if you didn't register within a certain period. Really didn't encourage registration if you were late registering and short of money.
No WORNES regs at all.

Hi,
I have just checked the Tasmanian Archives for convicts and found a William Wornes
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11
78615 Wornes William 13 Feb 1835 Lady Kennaway (1) 10 Jun 1834 Cork
If William arrived in 1835, then the Susan Wornes in the Colonial Family section of the Archives cannot be his daughter as she married in 1846.
Was Susannah's father a Tasmanian Convict? And was she born in Tasmania?
There is no Stephen Wornes listed on the Tasmanian site, and there is a Stephen Wornes listed on the NSW site
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
but the birth is listed in 1886, with Stephen and Ellen as parents in Albury....I am assuming that this might be Stephen's son.
I have also checked W.A. and Qld BDM's with no results.
Cheers

Thanks for that,
William Warnes the convict was my GGG Grandfather, his Daughter Susannah was born in Norfolk before he came to Tasmania, Stephen William 1856 is her son. I did find her marriage in Tas and daughter Ann Bayle, dont know what happenned to him.
Stephen's marriage cert says he was born in SA and that his father was William, I hope that was not his Grandfather. Stephen lived near Albury NSW not far from where I now live, I have details of his marriage, children and death but I dont know which William Wornes was his father.
I think he was most likely illegitimate, there are a few of the Wornes family that have a fathers name but I cant work out which family the father belongs to.
Another one is Susannah's daughter Amelia Williams, she had 8 children with John Wornes in NSW from around 1880, never married to him so I cant find out if John was her mothers brother or a cousin or what. I wonder if one of the childrens birth certificates will tell me more about him. I cant find a death for him either, Amelia married in 1903 and used her maiden name so I presume John died or ran away.

I am researching William Wornes family. I have heaps of information on Rebecca Wornes who married James New in 1885 at Sandhurst, now Bendigo, but not much on anyone else.
I know that William was a convict and that her married Margaret Humphries in 1824 in Barwick, Norfolk.
He had 8 children - William, Susannah, Mary, Francis and Rebecca all born in Norfolk and John, Matthew and Henry born in Tasmania. I would love to know more.
William died in Bowna, N.S.W. and Margaret in Cobden, Victoria in 1887.

Hi Gerry
I take it that you are researching the Wornes family as well.
It was mainly Stephen's birth details I was after, I have managed to track most of the family around the albury area but his birth details are a bit sketchy.

Hi mum mum
There seems to be some similarity with this thread but perhaps you may already know about this?

Hi
Yes it is the same family, still gets me no closer to Stephen william's birth though, it's probably one of the things we may never know.
This is an old post of mine which someone has found and added some information. I was hoping it may have related to Stephen's birth, but not to be.

Hi mum mum
I didn't read the whole thread. Just saw in the first post that someone else thought Stephen was the son of John Williams. My thought was Stephen may have been recorded somewhere as WILLIAMS and not WORNES but obviously not.

There is a Stephen Wornes born in Victoria in 1853. Mother is Susannah Wornes.
Susannah married John Williams in Canada and had Amelia and Eliza. Could Stephen have been known as Stephen Williams at some stage and then went back to using Wornes and added William as his second name?
-
Hi,
Have you found a birth in Victoria for Stephen? What is the spelling of Wornes and what is the Reg No?
I have searched under everything I could think of to find it but cannot.
