I am looking for the origins of William COOK who lived and raised his family in Grandborough in the mid 1800s. He married Sarah Janes and had at least seven children. He was reported to have been born in neighbouring North Marston in 1804 (from census returns). I would be grateful if anyone can point me to a baptism record or parish records which might indicate his parents.

William Cook was baptised on the 1st Jan 1803, North Marston (christening batch number= C109941). His parents were William Cook and Elizabeth. His siblings were:
John Cook baptised 2nd May 1804, North Marston (batch no:C109941)
Thomas Cook baptised 17/5/1806, North Marston (batch no: C109941),
Matthew Cook baptised 15/11/1808, North Marston (batch no: C073271),
Vincent Cook born 8/12/1810, baptised 23/12/1810, Grandborough (batch no: C073271)
Emanuel Cook born 21/7/1812, baptised 2/8/1812, Grandborough (batch no: C073271)
Alice Cook baptised 19/3/1815, North Marston (batch no: C073271)
James Cook baptised 13/1/1817, North Marston (batch no: C109941)
So as you can see the family moved between the two villages. Grandborough is now called Granborough (the d was dropped as the inhabitants believed it sounded too posh!). I can take a look at the Granborough headstones, and North Marston as well for you if you would like to see if any of them are buried there and get some pictures for you if they are?

I haven't seen the actual certificates, but the BMD death indexes do suggest a family tragedy in 1858. In the third quarter of that year, Jane Odell - wife of (the above mentioned) William Cook's third son, Thomas - died and on the same page is registered the death of infant Thomas; while in the fourth quarter Mary Ann Foskett - the wife of William's second son Joseph - died - recorded on the same page as infant Nathan.
All were living in Grandborough at the time so would be interesting if there was any lasting memorial to them.

I will take a look at the headstones again for you and can give you a list of names there. There are not very many surviving headstones pre 1900s and most of them are too weathered to read names. The surnames do not ring any bells either, so am not sure that any of the family stayed in the area. I grew up in Granborough, and now live a few miles away, however my father has moved to North Marston. I was born in Oxford, so was very surprised to find some of my family roots in Granborough!! I will be taking another trip to the graveyard after Easter, but with three young children, I am not yet sure when. You can email me direct at : (*). I have recently begun researching my family and stumbled upon your post. My G.G.G Grandfather was William Cook, baptized on 1st January 1803 in North Marston. My receords show his wife was Sarah Read baptized 20th February 1803 in Cuddington.
I'm not used to these message board type things so I'm not exactly sure how it all works. I do however hope you receive this OK. And, more importantly you respond and I can find the response!!

George Cook, b. 1856, Grandborough, Bucks , d. 1856
George Cook, b. 1857, Grandborough, Bucks
Levi Cook, b. 1860, Grandborough, Bucks
Vincent Cook, b. 1862, Grandborough, Bucks
Elizabeth Cook, b. 1865, Grandborough, Bucks
David Cook, b. 1866, Grandborough, Bucks
Nathan Cook, b. 1868, Grandborough, Bucks , d. 21 Nov 1868, Grandborough, Bucks
Given Nathan died on 21/11/1868 & Mary Ann was buried 24/11/1686 in St John the Baptist, Grandborough, Bucks, I think it's fair to sadly conclude that she died in, or as a result of, Childbirth.
My G Grandfather was Vincent Cook, who moved to Watford, Herts, seemingly as a result of the expansion of the Railyway? I still live in Watford.

I would like to clarify whether William Cook b1802(3) married Sarah James or Sarah Read on Aug 4, 1823. Are there any marriage certificates, PR's to validted this? or is it possible that William might of married both of these individuals?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Should of put this information in previously but I'm stll in the learning stage.
The information I have is that they were married in Edlesborough, Buckinghamshire, England. No idea what church. My previous research had that it was Sarah Janes who married William but having read through this chat I am not possitive. My Sarah James was also born in Cuddington about 1804.
Philip Rickard who married Rose Ann Cook is part of my direct family tree. Therfore my interest in the Cook family.

IGI have 2 William COOK marriages @ Edlesborough. One to Sarah JONES in 1823, and Sarah EMERSON in 1829.
Banns aren't a marriage, as you know. I would be inclined to ask BucksFHS for a marriage search, as IGI is not complete either. For £1, it may solve a puzzle. if one exists. ;)
