Title: Vanbrugh Hill, Greenwich
Post by: dblun on Tuesday 07 April 09 06:23 BST (UK)

Anyone know / or could discover what was located at 48 Vanbrugh Hill , Greenwich East in 1929.

A "tree member'" died at this address and I'm wondering if this was the location of a hospital.

The family home was on Childeric Road at the time!

Thanks and Happy Easter Bunnies :D

Well, the Infirmary (which was part of the Greenwich Work House) was on the corner of Vanburgh Hill at the Greenwich end of the hill, so it could have been that.  The whole site later became St. Alfege's Hospital, which in its turn became the Greenwich District Hospital (now demolished).  Try sending an email to the Greenwich Heritage Centre (you'll find it on Google) - they may be able to confirm.

I was born at this address, too, in 1932 and have always wondered if it was a house or a hospital, now I know  - a workhouse/infirmary - not tops on my list of places to be born in!  Eva

Well, by 1932 the running of the hospital was under the control of Greenwich Council, so I don't think it was locally called a workhouse any more.  The NHS didn't start until 1948, so the hospital still had to be funded locally.

Google for "Local Government Act 1929" (I can't paste links here).

ah, now I feel a bit better about my origins, thanks for that Nick.  You seem very knowledgeable about the comings and goings of 48 Vanbrugh Hill, my family background is in greenwich and I know very little about it. Eva

I was born about 1/4 of a mile from there myself  :)

Dear All,

Thank you for posting this information about Vanburgh Hill. My grandfather was born at this address and I have never been able to get past first base finding out more about his family. This is not helped by the surname Jones! He was born in March 1909 so I assume it was a work house then.

If anyone has any further information I would be very grateful for some help.

Many thanks

Angela
