Hi I'm a bit of a novice at this game that said I'm hooked!

I'm trying to trace a John Lilwall born 1838 in knighton, (I was under the delusion that this was in Herefordshire, but a fellow family historian but me right) He married a Lucy lovett in 1860 in Hay. She was born in Cusop Herefordshire. I have traced him back to the 1871 census, but no futher. He later became a sawyer in Cusop and Hay.

Can anyone help me trace him in the 1861 census back, as i don't have access to census as yet beyond 1871

Any help would be gratefully received

 Cheers
 Tim

				Hi Tim
John was in Hay in 1861.
Cannot find him in breconshire in 1851.
Lucy appears to have been in hay in 1851.

				Hi

Know that some time has passed since your message, but I wonder if you have found John Lilwall on the census.   He is my 3xGr.Uncle.   I do have information for him on 1851,1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and Lucy and her son Charles on the 1901 census.   I am willing to pass on this information if so wish.

 Kind regards
 Lucyellen

On the 1851 census John is aged 12 and in Whitney on Wye.

His parents and John and Mary and there are a number of siblings.

If you want his birth certificate it will be available from the
 Kington Register Office

There is a place in Kington called Lilwall

				Hi

Many thanks for your information on John Lilwall.   I have the family quite well documented, but are still looking for descendants.   If there is anyone out there with the name of Lilwall I would like to hear from you.

 Regards
 Lucyellen

Here is one to add to your collection, if you don't already have it:
Thomas LILWALL, (born circa 1846 at Breinton HEF, son of Thomas), married Caroline WATKINS 26 Mar 1867 at Clifford HEF. This couple don't appear to have had any children, but in the 1901 Census, they have a 7yr old grandson Thomas BIBLE, born New South Wales (NSW) Australia. There was an unnamed male BIBLE born 1893 in NSW to Frederick J and Emily. There is a marriage of Emily LILWALL and Frederick J BIBLE in Woolhara NSW in 1893. I've got no idea when or why Emily was in Australia. There are no further records of her or Frederick in NSW.

The is a Farm and an area just outside Kington in Herefordshire called Lilwall.

The present Hereford phone book shows a few Lilwalls mostly living in South Herefordshire

Many thanks for your infomation.   I haven't as yet tied in the Thomas Lilwall with my family, but it is a piece of useful info regarding a Grandchild, and they hadn't had any children!  Unless if course Caroline may have had a child by a previous marriage.
I have been told that the Lilwall family are recorded in the Lilwall Green  in about the 13th century, and it was named after a well called Lilla's well.   I have no evidence of this, just hearsay!
 Many thanks

There is a book called Herefordshire Place Names by Bruce Copplestone-Crow which may give the derivation of the placename Lilwall

Many thanks, I will see if I can track it down.

Thomas LILWALL and Caroline WATKINS said they were both 22yrs old when they married, but he was 19 and she was 18.  WATKINS was her maiden name, so she hadn't married before. It is possible that Emily was born prior to the marriage, (there is an Emily LILWALL born in the Sep qtr 1861 at Hay, which includes Clifford, but it can't be the right one because her 'parents' would be 13 and 12! :o) . If Emily was Caroline's daughter and registered under a different surname, its odd that she isn't with them in the 1881 Census, nor was she with Caroline's parents or siblings. She is not in the 1881 Census as LILWALL. I haven't seen the 1871 census entry.

This is something to think about.   1871 census thanks to ancestry.com.uk Thomas and Caroline are living on their own - no children.
Also on the 1901 census there is a George Lilwall born Hereford with his wife born Bolton Lancashire and a family of children all born in Australia.   There may be a connection.
I don't think that George is part of my family tree, likewise Thomas although part of our family were living at Clifford.

I don't have much info on the Lilwall side, other than John's parents as John Lilwall and Mary Baker. I have got Lucy's family back to 1740 possible marriage

				Hi

Just a thought, but thanks for the offer of photographs.   I do occasionally go to Hay as I still have relatives living there, and I don,t live all that far away.
