Please can someone help. I have a marriage certificate for James Matterson and Sarah Miller. they were married at the Parish Church in the Parish of Gosforth. Father of groom Richard matterson from Fleming Hall and Father of Bride Thomas Miller. Would the Parish Record have the mothers Name on it as I am trying to trace the mother of sarah Miller. Marriage was in November 1867. Hope someone can put me in the right direction. Thank you in advance.

Hi
Mothers names are/were never shown on English marriage certs

Thank you. I will have to think of another way to find out her mother. I have found two births for a sarah miller in 1847 in whitehaven, which according to the census she was born, so i will have to see what I can find out.

The 1871 shows Sarah was b Whitehaven c 1850 but unfortunately she was deceased by 1881 and James had re-married
The 1851 census shows her as Sarah Millar and she is living with grandparents Thomas & Sarah and was between 5 and 7 months old so this is probably her birth from freebmd
Births December qtr 1850
Miller Sarah Whitehaven 25 175

The 1851 census shows her as Sarah Millar and she is living with grandparents Thomas & Sarah
I think you may have found her Carole. And I expect the "father" she named when she married was actually her grandfather. Note that Thomas MILLAR the younger was only 10 in 1851.
1841 shows a choice of three potential mothers -
Jane 10
Hannah 9
Betsy 7
but the IGI shows that her mother was actually Jane MILLER 24 Nov 1850 at St James.

THankk you to both of you. I did see those on the census and wondered if it was her. On her marriage certificate it says that she was 19 years old and father Thomas miller was of Independent means. The age on the marriage cert threw me. I have looked for her death and cannt find a record so far and her Husband is with Ellen Goodwin in the later census and have not found there marriage on any records so far.

Stepson Thomas Goodwin aged 5 was b Seaton which was part of Cockermouth reg district
Births December qtr 1875
Thomas Edward Goodwin Cockermouth 10b 564
There is also this death
Deaths March qtr 1878
George Gonville GOODWIN aged 26 Cockermouth 10b 323
George was b Cambridge 1852 and was the son of Harvey Goodwin Bishop of Carlisle and the family were living in Cumberland in 1871 but there is no George Goodwin marriage to an Ellen
But then there is this marriage
Marriages December qtr 1878
James Mathason Whitehaven 10b 916 with possible spouse
Ellen Morton or Elizabeth Cubbin
There is no 1881 entry for a James Mathason

Thank you so much for your help. I will look at those records. Prehaps the Matterson name was Spelt wrongly. On certificate for marriage with sarah miller, It was transcribed with a different spelling, and the writing on the certificate does look like Matheson. so the info you gave me is very interesting.
Once again many thanks
