Post by: jaytoot on Sunday 05 April 09 23:29 BST (UK)
Hello everyone,

I am trying to trace information on Hiram Ayres born around 1890 (don't know where.
He married Annie Miley in Croydon in 1916.

First world war records show him living at 29 Queens road Mitcham and he is a flower seller.
They have 3 children.
Maria Born 1908.
Sally (might be Billy?) Born 1910.
Vertina Born 1918.

Help please,

Jim

They also had another son

Births December qtr 1916

Hiram Ayres  mothers maiden name  Miley  Croydon  2a 573

Were the first 2 children from a previous marriage or were they Annie's and they only married in 1916

If you check freebmd by putting in surname Ayres and mothers maiden name Miley you will find 12 entries between 1916-1930 all in Croydon

However - some could be from a different family as the entries show 2 births in the same year and only 3-6months apart

Hello Carol

Yes I see that, but it can get confusing because there is another ayres marriage where the wife may be Annie's sister.

1904 Henry or William to Maria Miley.

If you do a search on all Ayres children born in Croydon, Mothers name Miley, it is a big list.

Hi Carol,

I can only assume that the first 2 children were born before they married. The name Maria could be after her sister! Not sure where the name Sally came from!!

Maria's  (also recorded as Mariah) mother was called Moretta or Murilla, I have not been able to work out her maiden name.

Hi Carol,

yes, I saw that. I have checked free bmd for both years free bmd and cannot see anything registered.
I also ran the check without the last name because of the funny spellings of Ayres and still no luck.

There is a Hiram Eyre but he was born in Derbyshire and father was a coalminer.  If this was a travelling family - the birth may not have been registered.  I can't find an 1891/1901 entry that matches

A copy of his marriage cert will (hopefully) show a fathers name

You could order it with a condition attached that you only want it if a father is shown for Hiram.

If none is shown - the GRO will only charge you a £3 search fee

Hello, I to am trying to trace the person who put the photo of my grandparents on root chat, you have his name as Hiram Ayres and my grandmother as Annie. Well I can tell you that my grandads name was James MILEY and her name was Vertina James (funny as I have just come home from being at there grave) as far as I am aware he was never married before. He came from Cork in Ireland.  There children was Carrie (died) as a child, James known as Jim, Billy, Patrick (his real name was Hiram I believe) Leonard, Charlie,Mickey,Christine and my father Joseph known as Joe Married to Priscilla.  I know this photo as I grew up seeing it every day of my life.  Please get in touch if you have more information.

You were trying to contact my dad jtoot . Sadly he died in 2010 . His nan was vertina james and his grandad james miley . I probably don't know as much as you do because I can't access my dad's online family tree work and any info he did leave were on scraps of paper in no particular order. It's really sad that he never got to see your messages because we would have been really happy . I would love to hear from you !!! If you don't get a speedy response it's because I can't figure out how to use this website !!
