I have JOHN JONES age 25 his wife MARY age 25 and child RICHARD age 1
along with his mother-in-law, ANN FREY age 65 living at KNAVEGOBY Cornwall in the 1841 census.
But...........they go missing after that........no sign of them over the next few years until RICHARD marries MARY JANE JONES in 1864 but no sign of JOHN at all.
One of the wittinesses for RICHARD is JOSEPH JONES (his Grandfather maybe?)
The question is where were the family between 1841 and RICHARD's marriage?
I am helping a dear friend to solve this "problem" can you help us please? We would be very grateful and my friend would be so happy :)

Hi
Is Richard's the Redruth marriage on freebmd?
Are all family shown as "born in county" on the 1841 census
Is John shown as deceased on Richards marriage cert
What was John's occupation in 1841 and his occupation on the marriage cert
If you have Richard on the 1871/81 - where does he show as his birthplace

Hi Soxie,
I feel this can answered in Gwinear. ;D
HO107/1916 Folio 424 Page 13
In 1851 I find a Jennifer JONES as head of the house. She is a 48 year old widow living with her 2 children Jane 18 and Ann 16, also her "son and daughter in laws" Richard 11 and Ann 7 Son in Law is often a term used in place of Step Child. I do see a possible marriage of
John JONES = Jenifer JONES Dec 1/4 1847 Redruth 9 345
Looks like Ann was born in 1844. There are a couple of possible deaths for Mary listed.
Richard lists pob as Gwinear in 1851 and 1861 (listing as son to Jenifer in 1861) 1871 he is now listing Camborne as his pob but he is still in Gwinear where he has grown up. Miner in 1861 and 1871. Jenifer and Ann are living only a few houses away from him in 1871 ;)

Thank you both very much for your time.
John was married to MARY JANE FREY.
(JENNIFER is a different JONES.)
I have JOHN and MARY JANE's marriage as DEC 1839 on freeBMD
John was a COPPER MINER.
All the family were born in Cornwall on the 1841 census.
John was alive on RICHARD's birth certificate (21st November 1839 at Knavegoby) and the birth was notified by MARY JANE's mother ANN FREY.
JOHN did appear on RICHARD's marriage certificate to MARY JANE JONES on February 20th 1864 and was still down as a miner
The witnesses were JOSEPH JONES and WILLIAM PENHALE.
So you see what a muddle we have.........too many Richards and too many Jones ::) ???
But thank you again for your kind help.........back to the drawind board :'(
Hopefully you can make sense of all this ;D

Hi
If you read Kris's reply again - I think you will find that this is the scenario:
Between 1843-1851 Mary Jane (Frey) died. Mary Jane had daughter Ann 1843/44
Prior to 1851 John married again to Jennifer Jones who was also probably married previously as she has 2 older children in 1851
John died before the 1851 census as Jennifer is a widow but the 2 children from John's marriage to Mary Jane (Frey) (ie) Richard and Ann - are living with Jennifer as her step children. As Kris says - it was common practice for enumerators to refer to stepchildren as sister in law/brother in law as is the case here
-
:) Wow.........I see where you are going now. I didn't realize that step children were put down as son/daughter in law.
Many thanks again to you both for your kind help.
We will follow this up and I'll let you know how we get on.
Can I find Jenifer's first marriage do you think? Maybe John and Jenifer were related?
I haven't found a death yet for John within the time scale only one in June 1859 in Redruth.........what do you think?
Again, I thank you both for your help and sorry kris for being so thick and not understanding your answers :P

Hi
Can I find Jenifer's first marriage do you think? Maybe John and Jenifer were related
I don't think there was a first marriage for Jennifer if these 2 IGI entries are anything to go by as no father is shown
JANE JONES Christening: 10 MAR 1833 Gwinear
Mother JENNIFER JONES
ANNA MARIA JONES Christening: 27 JUL 1836 Gwinear
Mother JENIFER JONES
I haven't found a death yet for John within the time scale only one in June 1859 in Redruth.........what do you think?
John died between 1847 when he re-married and March qtr 1851 as Jennifer is a widow on the 1851 census

Hi soxie,
The marriage cert will prove it, but it appears by the basptisms of her 2 children in Gwinnear that Jenifer was unmarried. Only mother listed
Jane 10 Mar 1833
Anna Maria 27 July 1836
In 1841 she appears to be residing with Parnal JONES. I think this probably her mother.
JOANS William Sojourner = GOLDSWORTHY Parnal 12 Aug 1792 Redruth
Looks like one child born in Redruth and more in Gwinnear
There was among their children a daughter
JONES Jane baptised 6 Feb 1803 in Gwinnear.
Jenifer and Jane are interchangeable names particularly in Cornwall
Cheers Kris :)
