Where have you looked for the marriage? It was by no means unusual for a marriage to take place in the bride's home village. The surrounding villages include Scamblesby, Stenigot and Tathwell etc. so it would be well worth trying those, there is of course the likelihood that he met his future wife at one of the hiring fairs, quite possibly in Horncastle, Lincoln or Louth. Lincolnshire Archives are quite helpful if you are within range.

Thank you Redroger, for that, I don't live in the county, so have only the IGI to look at, but I will try those you suggested. Once again, Thank you.

Access to "The Phillimore Atlas and Index of Parish Registers " by Cecil R. Humphery-Smith would be helpful. Your local reference library should have a copy, but take a magnifier with you!

Thank you Redroger for your help. I will do what you suggest. Does this index have all the counties, or just for Lincolnshire bye the way.

It has all the counties of England, Wales and Scotland, an index plus a pre ordnance survey map, early 19th century, and a coloured map of all the historic counties.

Asterby is in the Horncastle deanery. There are a few RANYARD marriages for 1754-1812 but there is no Robert RANYARD listed.

The only Robert RANYARD marriage I could find 1754-1812 in Lincolnshire was a marriage in 1782 at Skirbeck. The spouse was Elizabeth WILLSON.

Either the marriage was out of county, non-conformist or they never married.

Thank you Rover72 for that, I believe the family were Huguenots, or so I have been informed. It would explain why the family are difficult to trace. Roberts son was James Ranyard, a School master in the village, the School house is still there, as some one very kindly sent me a photo of it.

Geof, What publication are you talking about? My edition of Phillimore Atlas &Index of Parish Registers, 3rd Edition 2003 ISBN 1 86077 239 0 has over 600 parishes listed for Lincolnshire listed in the Lincolnshire Index pp 183-190 including Asterby, too many for me to count in a few seconds! Perhaps we are referring to different publications? However, if the family were Hughenots it would account for their absence from rec ords.

Different books I suggest Roger.

There may be 700 parishes existing in Lincs, but only the listed ones (above) have had their marriages transcribed/indexed by Phillimore's.

Agreed Geoff, I am referring to the Atlas and Index of Parish Registers, you are referring to the Phillimore Marriage Index. Am I correct?

Tried to stop my previous post -too late- what I was attempting to show for Olfen was the surrounding parishes to Asterby where the marriage might have taken place i.e in the brides home parish, see my earlier post regarding this and hiring fairs.

If they were Huguenots you might want to check out the Huguenot Society's website, particularly the family history section where there are quite a few helpful downloadable pdf files http://www.huguenotsociety.org.uk/index.php?page=family

In the Guidance notes pdf, it says "After 1753 all marriages had to take place by law in English parish churches."

Not sure if this is relevant, but my paternal grandmother was a Ranyard.  I believe she was born in or around Sixhills which is near Horncastle.  The family later moved to the North Cotes/Marshchapel  area of Lincolnshire.
