I am seeking any information re Edward Treasure, born 3 March 1825 and convicted of larceny on 28 March 1848 in Wells, believed to be his second conviction, sentenced to 10 years. Transferred from the Stirling Castle Hulk to the Minden 16 July 1851 transported to Fremantle West Australia. By 1880 he and his wife were considered affluent through farming and land. I would like to know more about the conviction, the family and/or the Stirling Castle if possible. His property Martinup is being considered for heritage listing and we are gathering interesting info for possible text/displays

I can find only one Edwd TREASURE of that era recorded in 1841 aged 15 [rounded down] a Prisoner 'Laborer' Not born in County in the General Penitentiary, St John The Evangelist, Westminster [County: Middlesex]
See http://www.plymouthdata.info/Prison%20Ships.htm for brief details of the Stirling Castle.
-
Thanks for that Dee Jay. The age seems right, do you know how I find out the details of the conviction? I don't quite follow your last sentence, does that mean he was in prison in that Parish area? Thanks again, Merilyn
-
Unfortunately, the 1841 Census only gives a Yes or No response to whether born in same County where he was enumerated.
I can't access 1851 Census but if not transported until July 1851 he might feature elsewhere in the UK, which should give his actual birthplace, if known. I note in the Ancestry 1851 index there is an Ed TREASURE born about 1821 recorded in Hampshire, where there were offshore prison hulks. Perhaps some other kind soul could check that census return for you?
I'm sorry I can't assist with details of the conviction.

The 4 other males convicted on the same date, same charge, same sentence were William Chamberlain, William King , Charles Gibbons and William Castle.
-
Thanks, I didn't think of the 1851 as he was transported, but of course they were done before July. He was in the hulk 'Stirling Castle' which I think was at Plymouth.

Brilliant, Ian!
There are loads of TREASUREs in 1841 at Stoke Lane and I note there are Bishops' Transcripts for Stoke Lane [aka Stoke St Michael] at Taunton, so it should be possible to establish his ancestral line.

If you do not already have it
Stoke Lane baptisms
1825 Apr 10, TREASURE Edward, s/o Levi & Elizabeth, Stoke, collier, born 1825 Mar 3
Lots of siblings on the IGI starting about 1806.
Levi and Elizabeth were still around in 1861, he being 89.
Might be him baptised at Stoke Lane 8 Oct 1771, son of James TRESURE. Name is transcribed as Leuey/Luey/Lewis, so must have been a bit unreadable.
Downhead marriages
1806 Jan 13
TREASURE Levi, of the parish of Stoke Lane
TRUSLER Betty, otp
wits: John Walter, Hannah LEWIS, banns
Downhead baptism
1779 Feb 14
TRUSLER Bete, F, Thomas & Ann

I note that in the 1841 census that Levi is noted as an Agricultural labourer, and curiously the records show Edward aged 7 living in Giddy Lane (?) with Maria Treasure aged 40 (‘knitter’), James Treasure 10, and Eliza Treasure 8. John Brown aged 25 was the only other resident in the home, Ipresume he was 'head’ of the household, aged 25. Levi 65 and Elizabeth 50 lived a couple of residences away at Philpers Hill (?) with Isaac Treasure aged 4 and Jacob Treasure 1. Anyone who can suggest why this arrangement could be happening?
-
Ian, you did better than me! For some reason I can't access the IGI via FamilySearch at the moment and the parish does not appear amongst the batches on the Hugh Wallis website.
Merilyn, failing all else, an appeal to Somerset Record Office for details of the conviction might prove fruitful, having regard to the reason for your research.

At a guess, I would say that Maria was likely to be a widow [of the James whose death was recorded 1Q 1841 Shepton Mallet 10 306?] and that Levi/Elizabeth were grandparents with a couple of children [overnight?]. But, of course, parentage needs checking via IGI as there are a couple of other male TREASURE deaths: Joel 1838 and Isaac 1839 [FreeBMD].
There is a marriage 4Q 1843 John BROWN/Maria TREASURE Shepton Mallet 10 664.
Update:
Husband guess was wrong but intuition was partially on track as Maria MOON married William TREASURE 1823; William TREASURE aged 37 was buried 1833.

Most of them are at Stoke Lane, although Betty's family were from Downhead
Levi and Betty are in Stoke Lane in 1841, 1851 and 1861. In 1841 she is Elizabeth and in 1851 and 1861 she is Betty.

Hello
I came across your post quite by accident and wonder if you ever found out what you wanted to know.
Edward Treasure is a distant relation of mine and I should be able to 'dig up' the info that you were looking for if you are still interested.
Cheers

Hello there,
I have some members of the Treasure family in my tree and have an interest in this line.
The registers for Stoke Lane (now Stoke St Michael) are on Freereg and contain very many entries for the Treasure family.
http://www.freereg.org.uk
I visited the church at Stoke St Michael in 2008 and remember the graveyard was full of graves for members of the Treasure family. I made a note of some of these and can provide them if it helps. I think that Levi is buried there.
There is a very good local history book on Stoke St Michael and this gives considerable information on the area and families who lived there. I think it can be obtained from Frome Museum.

Hi Merilyn
This should cover the first question you originally raised. (ie details of conviction):
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/r/e/Richard-P-Treasure/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-Sources.html
The "Stirling Castle" was anold 74 gun ship, built at Rochester and launched 31 Dec 1811. She measured 176'x 48' 1774 tons. She was converted to a hulk for convicts in April 1839 and was initially moored at Deveonport but moved to Portsmouth in 1845. She was broken up in 1861.
Will get back to you on the rest of the Treasure Family shortly.

Hi Jo
Levi Treasure is my gggg grandfather and I would be very interested of any burial details that you may have.
We were in the Bath/Salisbury area on holidays August 2008 but at that stage were unaware of any connection to the Treasures. Pity....................
Thank you for the two web sites - will come in handy.
Which line of Treasures are you from?
Bill

I am happy to share what I have permission to share (!) :) at the moment am a bit snowed under but over the weekend will get back to you.
Thanks again, this is just great.
-
Hello houseofbrown,
I will get the details on Treasure burials for you and post them shortly.
The family I have in my tree starts with Isaac Treasure born 1770, Holcombe. He had a son, John, born 1800, Holcombe. John had a daughter, Lydia, born 1827, Holcombe.

Hello there,
Re the graves in Stoke St Michael, these are what I noted down on my visit:
Levi Treasure died 21/04/1947, aged 85. In the same grave Alice Treausre, wife of Levi, died 11/07/1954, aged 87.
Theophilus Treasure died 23/03/1924, aged 87. In the same grave, Sarah Treasure wife of Theophilus, died 01/03/1912, aged 83.
Mark James Treasure died 20/04/1922, aged 83.
Thirza Treasure, died 19/01/1934, aged 95.
I don't think this is the same Levi Treasure as you mention.
Jo
-
Hi Jo
'Your' Levi Treasure is actually a grandson so that adds a bit more info to my tree.
I don't know who the others are which is not surprising as the Treasures seemed to all have very large families! One thing though, they all lived to ripe old ages.
I'm still trying to connect my family with Isaac Treasure.
Thanks, Bill.
-
Hello houseofbrown,
I should have said that this list of Treasure graves is not exhaustive. There were more but I only made a note of these at the time.
I think the Holcombe Treasure family links to the Stoke Lane side of this tree but cannot recall how as yet.

Hi Jo
I have just worked out our common connection - we are both descended from John Treasure b1675. John had two sons (amongst others) Tobias 1708 and Samuel 1702. You are descended from Samuel and me from Tobias. (That probably makes us about 7th cousins!)
Cheers, Bill
-
Hello Bill,
Thanks very much for the information. Welcome to my new 7th cousin!
We may be more closely related as most of these families from the villages round there were inter married many times over. The same names crop up time and time again.
When I looked at the registers for Leigh on Mendip, there were only about 6 surnames there going back to the 1850s.

Hi Merilyn. I am a descendant of Edward and I believe that I have a copy of his court documents which were acquired by my brother during a trip to somerset. Bit busy at the moment but may be able to dig them out
-
Hi, I would be very interested in your information on Edward about the trials as they may contain information about his brothers and sisters. My OH descends from his younger brother James. I have quite a few copies of the other siblings trials as well as their father Levi and am more than happy to share them with you. Kind Regards, Veanne

On a recent visit to Perth, WA my wife and I visited Fremantle prison and I was intrigued to discover an Edward Treasure had been transported there from the Somerset area. My mother's family name is Treasure and her family were from that area. Her first name was Violet. Her brothers were Charlie (dec'd) Frank (now in his late 80s) and her sister Sabina, (known as Vena) there were other siblings whose names I don't know. Their father's name was Charles.
I would love to know a little more of the family history

Hi Mike,
There is a possible connection with you and the convict Edward to WA. His father was Levi TREASURE - Levi's father was James TREASURE. This James TREASURE bap. 23 Feb 1731 was possibly the brother to John TREASURE bap. 19 Jul 1730 Stoke Lane. This John TREASURE is your 5g-grandfather.
ie, John, James, Jeremiah Lewis, Aeneas, Charles Henry, Violet Doris, Mike.
I say possible connection only because the evidence for the baptism of James is from the IGI and not from the Stoke Lane Parish Registers. The Stoke Lane Parish Registers are in very poor condition and unreadable in some cases so it may very well be there, just not able to be seen at this point in time.
If you have specific questions (as I don't know how much you already know) just ask, I am always happy to help a fellow treasure hunter. Do you have the book "The Treasures" compiled by Anne Williams?
kind regards, Veanne
PS. I have been putting some information on a website called Family Treasure Circles where it can be accessed free by anyone. At this stage it relates only to Levi TREASURE and his children and I still have more information to add - I just have to find the time to do it!
-
Hi Veanne
Thanks for the information which has got me very interested in my ancestry. Just as a matter of interest, when we were in Australia, we also saw at the war memorial in Perth (Kings Park)
the name of a W. Treasure who died in action WW1 and a J. Treasure who died in action in WW2. Both from Western Australia.
Have you any idea if they were descended from Edward and from each other? A big ask I know.
Yes I have got "The Treasures" by Anne Williams and am slowly working my way through it. My sister Eileen knows a lot more than me and I will e-mail her in Canada giving her this web site and the one you are compiling. I couldn't find Edward in the book and that's why I wrote a post.
Keep plugging away at your web site for all us Treasures please
Regards
Mike

Hi again Mike,
Wyndham TREASURE descends from my Levi's brother Edward who married Ann PERKINS. Wyndham was born in New Zealand and moved to Western Australia.
John TREASURE descends from my Levi's son Edward who married Anna Maria NORRISH. He was born in Western Australia.
So yes there is a relationship there.
kind regards, Veanne
