Could somebody please lookup to see if there are two sisters, Sarah Curtis and Mary Curtis, living in the somerset area, possible Bath.
Sarah would be approximately 12 in 1851 and Mary would be 10.
We have traced them in the 1861 census (in London) where they are living on their own with no parents. It would be very usefull to discover who their parents are and if they have any other siblings.
Many thanks

The 1851 is now online..........but lookuppers will need a bit of help!
Show us them in 1861...........Sarah & Mary are shall we say regular names throughout the Country............and Curtis is a well loved name as well!
Do you have them in 1871?
You need a marriage (if they married?) to find out who the father is?
Why Bath? is that what the census said? or do you know something we don't?

Hi Bryant,
Thank you for your interest. We think that Mary Curtis could have married our ancestor John James in London although we cannot find their marriage. We know that his wife was named Mary, came from Bath and was born in approximately 1841.
Their location in London on the 1861 census was very close to where John James was living, hence the interest. Yes, Bath was stated as their place of birth on the 1861 census.
Hope this helps

Hi Bryant,
Here we go.....John Henry James was born in Liskeard, Cornwall in appoximately 1835 and moved to London sometime in the 1850's. We have John James listed as living in 14 Modbury Terrace, St. Pancras in the 1861 census with Mary Curtis living at 3 Modbury Terrace. John was listed as a boarder, unmarried, carpenter aged 26. Mary's was listed as the Head, unmarried, Ironer aged 20.
John James and Mary James are listed in the 1871 census living in Kensington with 5 children, one of which was 10 years old suggesting that the couple were married soon after the 1861 census (although we cannot find any marriages on 1837.com for that period).
The assumption is that John and Mary met whilst living in St, Pancras with their dates and places of birth forming the connection.
Other censuses are consistant with age and location although the 1881 census names her as Jane (rather than Mary) but with Bath, Somerset still recorded as her place of birth. 1891 census shows her again as Mary.
We have mapped out the family James reasonably well since they moved to London, but we cannot find this connection to Mary, born Bath, Somerset.
Hope you can help

Hello We.......
In 1841 John appears to have lost his Mum is that correct? his father being William the Shoemaker, and his parents are William and Elizabeth?
1841 census
Bay Tree Hill, Liskeard, Cornwall
WILLIAM JAMES 60 AG LAB Y
ELIZABETH " 55 Y
WILLIAM " 28 SHOE M Y
WILLIAM " 12 Y
JOHN " 5 Y
MARY ANN " Y
------------------
and in 1871
1871 census
7 Wormington Road, Kensington
John H James 40 carpenter Cornwall ?
Mary " 30 laundress Bath, Somersetshire
Emma " 10 St Pancras, Middx
Florence " 8 "
John H " 5 "
William " 3 Hammersmith
George " 9 months Kensington
---------------
Now if I was you I would find one of the last births ie George born 1870 SEPT QTR, 1870, KENSINGTON, VOL 1A, PAGE 106 on freebmd and put in a request for Christmas.........one birth cert cost £7-00 online which will give you mother's name and Maiden name as well as father's name and occupation. The mother's maiden name will enable you to go looking for the marriage date from another angle.......
*** As Yet........As the census is to the head of the family.......you have no firm evidence that Mary is the mother of any of the children in the 1871 census!
My suspicions are that she is the mother of the last three but is she the mother of the first two?
Q......was Emma or Florence around in 1881........someone has to fill in the census sheet, the enumerator picks it up and transposes it!.............now if mum and dad don't read and write too well who would fill in the sheets.........only their was a
EMMA JANE JAMES born SEPT QTR 1861, PANCRAS, VOL 1B, PAGE 171.
would her real mum have been JANE......................fantasy, probably?..............
Q......How do yo know that JOHN H JAMES is John Henry James
In summary.........the purchase of one cert (George 1870) should be the start of your research and will lead to the answer of all your questions? 8)
