Title: FreeBMD Birth Record Search
Post by: jeanieb on Thursday 02 April 09 19:38 BST (UK)
Hello Everyone:

I wonder if anyone knows if it was required to register a birth in England in 1862.

My reason for asking is I’m trying to confirm the year and date of birth for my G-Grandmother’s Brother George Bowering but can’t seem to find a record of his birth in the FreeBMD to order a birth certificate. I can find two that were close but one shows the year of birth as 1863 not 1862 which is what we have the other shows the year we need but a different month.  Now normally I would just choose either one since we could have the wrong info but one of his brothers was born in 1863 and we have confirmed his date birth.  We have 8 Jul 1963 for his brother and 17 Feb 1862 for him.   If I’m correct about his birth mother his parents were married in Sept 1862 so now I’m completely confused ha-ha what I’m trying to do is order his birth certificate to confirm his mothers name you would think its simple it was for all of his siblings but I can’t narrow it down for him.   George Bowering and one of his brothers have a different mother than the other siblings.

His father’s name is Benjamin Bowering and his mother should be Eliza Hamilton Jones.  If I can’t find a BMD is there another way to order a certificate for him just providing them with his name/date of birth and parents name?

Any information would be helpful.

Many Thanks

The only George Bowering I can see is Q1. 1863 in Weymouth   :-\

Where did you find the 1862 one ?  If he was born Feb 1862 he could have been registered in the 2nd. quarter of 1862 and it might show as June 1862 -  ie June quarter.

Does that help ?

Hi both  :)

If his parents were married in Sep, then maybe you should look under the mother's maiden name.

Have a look at all births registered Bristol March & June quarter and see what shows?

(I can't see a George Jones but there is a Stowell, which seems to be Charlotte's maiden name. Makes you wonder ...)

Mum44:  Wow thanks so much for such a fast reply we got the Feb 1862 from the Canadian Census reports I know they are not always correct so it is possible the year is wrong.  The answer to your question is yes it does help so I'll try looking for another date to see if I can confirm his birth that way.  We have had the wrong year and birth for his father Benjamin so I guess it is also possible that we also have the wrong info for him as well.  Thanks for tip and for giving it so quickly.

Tati:  Thanks also for your quick reply, thats a good tip I'll also look up under the mothers maiden name.

Thank you both for you help I knew I was going to the right place.
