Recently discovered my great grandfather came from "Pendleton, England". I note there are two - one a small village near Clitheroe and another is an inner city area of Manchester. My great grandfather was born around 1854-1856, his name was William Wilson. His father was also William Wilson and I believe that both were bootmakers. William Junior apparently emigrated to Australia and arrived at the age of three (1858?) presumably with his parents but I have no idea of the mother's name. Unfortunately, they fall between the 1851 and 1861 census. Which is the more likely Pendleton? Which parish churches might have a record of his christening in 1855? Any information gratefully received.

Hi Donnai
Welcome to Rootschat!
I think you actually want this on the Lancashire main board rather than the Lancashire resources board. I only happened to see because I got excited when I saw Pendleton!
You can ask a moderator to move it, so more people see it.
We should be able to help decide which by looking at the census, and the occupations, unless you're really unlucky.
I'll have a look.
Best wishes

Hi Donnal - I'm more familiar with the Pendleton in greater Manchester - strictly it is'was part of Salford rather than Manchester, so that narrows down the search. On FreeBMD searching 1854-1856 for William Wilson registered Salford and ignoring those with a middle name (if he had one this will make a difference) there are two possibles:
Dec 1855 Salford 8d 13
Mar 1856 Salford 8d 58
On LancashireBMD selecting Salford these two come out as registered in the sub-districts of Pendleton (1855) and Greengate (1856) so the 1855 one looks more probable.

http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
The GENUKI page for this Pendleton is at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/PendletonS/
this gives details of churches in the area.
The "other" Pendleton's GENUKI page is
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Pendleton/
It was in the Clitheroe registration district at this time. Performing the same search on FreeBMD and there are two possibles:
Jun 1854 Clitheroe 8e 232
Sep 1854 Clitheroe 8e 216
Both are also on LancashireBMD under the Ribble district (modern equivalent) in the sub-districts of Chipping and Gisburn. As best as I can tell this makes it less likely that either birth was in Pendleton.
I'd be inclined to go with the Salford 1855 & order the certificate (either from the GRO or via the links on LancashireBMD) stipulating the father's name.
Good luck

Hi
I've had one look, mainly for Pendleton Salford, but haven't managed to pin them down. So many, and he may have changed occupation.
You may have to chance it with the certificate, but I will have another look.
Best wishes.

Thank you for your assistance. I agree that the 1855 looks to be the most likely except it is noted as December quarter. His death cert on 29.8.1922 claims he is 67 which meant he would have turned 68 in the December quarter making his year of birth 1854, however. Mitigating is the fact that the iniformant was the undertaker not his wife so he may have been guessing, ignoring the fact that his birthday was 2 days away etc. If the father is also William Wilson then this might look promising!

Hi,
Birth registration could be upto 6 weeks after the event, so someone registered in the December quarter of 1855 could have been born anytime from mid-August to 31 December of that year. Therefore this could tie in with being 67 on 29.08.1922 - rather tight, but possible; also as you mention it's always down to the informant's knowledge.
Your choice - it's possible they're all wrong and that he was one of the many that weren't registered at this period!

Hi
The Pendleton in Salford, has a big church there, called the Pendleton Church, Broad Street, Salford 6, Lancashire, and across the road from there there used to be the Salford Registry Office. I dont know whether the Registry Office is still there, but the actual building which was the Registry Office in the 1970's is still there. You can view the Pendleton church on the 'google map'
Kind Regards

Of interest, it appears that when William married in Australia, he was married at the Methodist Free Church in Adelaide. It seems there were a number of Methodist Free Churches in the vicinity of Pendleton in Salford, so this may be looking the more likely.

PS Did he Immigrate with anyone? Do you have the listing?
I found a possible for mine in Victoria in 1849. More later in another post! So it's not too early there.
Thinking about it, if William the father was this William's father, he got married quite late, which fits with William not born until 1850's.

Hi Could he have had a sister called Harriett? Could it have been Victoria?
http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search_results.asp
There's a Mre Wilson arriving on the ship Sity of Palaces with a William 3 and Harriett 2. This was Sept 1857.
Sometimes men went ahead to establish a trade, or his father could have died and they went to join family.
Thee are other indexes.
There was a demand for leather workers.
My family were shoemakers. I lloked on mNLA Newspapers yesterday and there were a number of results for them. ASnother branch were saddlers and arrived later.
Good hunting.

PS This was the unassisted passenger list. There were assisted passenger lists too. Having a trade, James might have been assisted. I don't know enough about it.
