was there a hospital in rathdrum in 1925 or a workhouse.. and where would you get records for either for 1925.. records of inmates and deaths.. can anyone help me

Slater's directory of 1894 mentions that Rathdrum has a workhouse and lists the following :
Richard R. Leeper F.R.C.S.I. surgeon & surgeon to the Workhouse infirmary

Here's a nice bit of information about Rathdrum Workhouse (scroll down left side for Rathdrum):

Many hospitals were formed from the workhouses in Ireland.

thanks for that information .. does anyone know what it was in 1925 a workhouse a hospital or a mental home.. where would i find out records and stuff
my uncle died there in 1925 which has really shocked us as a different story was told to my father... any suggestions.. the child was only 24 days old when he died and his name was john joseph brennan...

I suspect that the death certificate will give you more information (cause of death as well as name of the place at that time).

i have the death certificate but its difficult to read whether it says rathdrum home or rathdrum hospital.. but i know the place was a mental home at some time and a workhouse and now present day a old folks home and hospital... and the death cert does say what the child died from..

Can you post just the bit that gives place of birth? it's probably hospital but can't be 100 % sure without seeing it.
Rathdrum started out as a workhouse (opened 1841) and like most of them devolved into a hospital where people went when they were extremely ill.
Would suggest comtacting Wicklow County Library in Bray to see if they can help:

looking at the maps I dont think that the Current hospital (St. Colman's) is in the the same location as the older Workhouse/Infirmary

from a search of Irish Statutes in 1923 - refers to Institutions to be Provided by Board of Health in Co. Wicklow.
extract : '...(a) A County Home at Rathdrum for aged and infirm persons, chronic invalids, and expectant mothers...'
link to full Act : http://www.rootschat.com/links/05zb/
Assuming this act was was carried then it may account for mention of the word 'Home' as the location on the cert.

Very interesting, Shane. Looks like 'Rathdrum Home' is a possibilty for the local maternity hospital and would explain an infant death there. Perhaps library will have more information or can suggest where to look next.

Hi Rathdrum indeed had a workhouse or hospital and records of deaths are duly held by the Co Wicklow Heritage Center but denied access, the parish priest at Rathdrum also holds a lot of records in his registers of the deaths there. But if you are looking for a late death c1925 why is that you have not gone to the GRO to order such a record.
I can assist with some deaths but as you quote no names its very hard to guess at what you desire to find.

it does say home on the death certificate and john joseph brennan died there in march 1925 24 days after his birth.. but its all a mystery because his mother was committed to grangegorman in early feb 1925 so we were just curious as to why she had a breakdown before the child died.. the child had obviously been very ill before she was committed.. i got information from grangegorman and there is no mention of a child so i gather the child and the rest of the children where taken into care and he died in rathdrum home.. john joseph was my fathers youngest brother.. my father was five when he was born.. thank you for all the information anyone has helped me with.. thanks

Hi Cara,
I don't suppose you have anything useful on the marriage/births/deaths of John and Honor Moore from Sevenchurches whose two daughters, Bridget (b abt 1829) and Mary (b abt 1831) were sent from Rathdrum Workhouse to Australia as famine orphans under the Earl Gray Scheme in 1849 (parents both deceased by then). I am really having a struggle finding out anything at all about any of them from here in Australia, other than the above info from the shipping records.
Any help greatly appreciated!

After a year of searching, I think I've solved at least the first part of my quest - details in separate thread (Rathdrum Workhouse 1840s) - any additional info or tips still valued.

The workhouse is on the gounds beside the present day ST Colmans Hospital.
The workhouse has a grave yard up the lane behind the hospital. Known as the famine
graveyard.
It was set up as a workhouse during the famine. Then after the need for the workhouse
it became known as the county home. Older people that couldn't look after themselves,
went into the home. I wouldn't have called it a mental home.
Unmarried mothers were taken in to have here to
have there babies. The child would be then taken into care and the given out to families that
wanted children.
