Hi ,I was wondering if anyone had any information on a James Snaddon,b.15.04.1830,Polmont,Scotland, and married 30.12 1862 Tamworth,NSW ,Australia and died 08.01.1911 at Tamworth,NSW Australia.
He married a Mary Ann Coulton,I was looking to find out the name of his parents, thanks in anticapation. :( :(completed. :-*
-
Hi daisymae,
The only death I can see in NSW using the spelling you have given is
1811/1900 Joseph H. SNADDON father ANDREW mother ELIZABETH@ HAMILTON.
Under the Spelling with an E. are these 2 in Tamworth
3379/1911 SNEDDON ,JAMES , 8O YRS TAMWORTH
6131/1869 SNEDDON,JAMES fatherJAMES mother MARY @ TAMWORTH
So is it the SNEDDON in 1911 you are after?
Where did you get your information about James?

I do not see an inscription for this man at the Tamworth Cemetery.
Will keep looking.

Dear Daisymae,
I have just looked on the NSW BDM for your James. His (and Mary Ann's ) name was entered as SNEDDON
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
Reference: 3379
Year:1911
SNEDDON, JAMES 8O YRS TAMWORTH TAMWORTH
Where the parents name normally is entered, James only has 80 years Tamworth, so alas, his parents aren't entered.
Mary Ann's parents are entered however.
Reference :11214
Year :1904
SNEDDON MARY A WILLIAM MARY TAMWORTH
On their marriage certificate, Snaddon is again misspelt
Reference:3059
Year:1862
Groom:SNEDDEN JAMES
Bride:COULTON MARY ANN
Place: TAMWORTH
If you check on the BDM site, there is another SNADDON listed.
In the 1841 British Census there are 2 James Snaddon's listed living in Polmont.
James (aged 10) is listed as living with Mary SNADDON (aged 45)
James (aged 11) is living with Mary BENNIE (aged 35) along with George Snaddon (13), William Snaddon (9), Jean Snaddon (7) and Alexander Snaddon (5).
I don't know if either of these James are your man (especially considering the misspelling of his surname) but maybe some of the names will ring a bell.
Cheers

Dear Sue,
If this is the correct James (reply #3), then the William at Tamworth Cemetery may be his brother!

Anyway, allowing for a great many doubtfuls and lots of IF's
This could possibly be the death entry for WILLIAM who may possibly be the brother of James and it shows these parents ::)
Don't know ???

Hi Susie,
I would lke that to be true, but after a trawl of the immigration records I cannot find them all arriving in the right time frame.
There are a GEORGE and ALEXANDER [brothers ] together on GOLCONDA in 1858.
But no viable James at all. And no William is placed well either.
A bit patchy and indefinite ???
IT is possible that others have Resources to look beyond the State Archives for arrivals ;D
Possibly one of these 2 under different spellings??
SNADDEN James 25 ship Alfred .1858 Moreton Bay. Reels 2138, 2477
SNEDDEN, James 24 ship St Helena 1854 Sydney and/or Newcastle and brothers Reel 2137, [4/4791]; Reel 2467, [4/4942]

Dear Sue,
Let's hope a resources rich person hops on the thread..........with immigration records ;) ;)
Alas, it is my total achilles heel!
Cheers

Well here is the rest of the entries for SNEDDEN
SNEDDEN George 26 ship St Helena 1854 Sydney and/or Newcastle and brothers Reel 2137, [4/4791]; Reel 2467, [4/4942]

Hi
This is probably GEORGE's death with the same parents as WILLIAM
5622/1868 SNEDDON, GEORGE father ALEXANDER mother MARY @ NUNDLE
Nundle is in the TAMWORTH area.
The age gaps between the brothers on the ship tallies very closely with the age gaps of those on Susie's 1841 census findings.
Sue
ADDING
For reasons of elimination, the only other 2 SNEDDON deaths with Parents ALexander and Mary are for infant twins in the Merewether district in 1906 according to BDM nsw
-
Hi,
So of we go back to reply #3.............who is Mary BENNIE......is she their mother/nanny/married sister/aunty.......the mystery of it all! ;D ;D
Cheers

Hi daisymae,
A Big Welcome to RootsChat ;D
Lovely to have you join us.
Hi also Sue and Susie. Looks like you hardly need me here. Great work. ;D
I had found the 1841 and the possible ships arrivals to check before I left. Also noted the births of James, George and William are listed on the IGI along with the extracted of the marriage of
Alexander SNADDEN = Mary BENNIE 30 Jun 1826 Muiravonside, Stirling.
It is common in Scotland for a woman to use her maiden name (or alternate between her maiden and married name) I believe the children are with their mother in 1841. You can access the entry at
http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
Anyway, just back from a long stretch at the library, but at least I fitted in a nice lunch with a friend. ;D
Here are the passenger lists of interest which prove what you have already worked out.
From the passenger list of the St Helena arriving 20 Dec 1854 Sydney
SNEDDEN George 26 Miner b Polmont Stirlingshire Parents Alexander and Mary father dead mother living in Polmont Religion CS could read and write and was in good health
SNEDDEN James 24 ditto all
SNEDDEN William 21 ditto all bar pob Falkirk Stirlingshire
From the passenger list of the Golconda arrived Sydney 21 Oct 1858
SNEDDON George 28 Baker b Polman Stirling Parents Alexander and Mary father dead mother living in Polmont religion Presbyterian could read and write, in good health relative in the colonies 2 cousins James and William BANNING at Hanging Rock
SNEDDON Alexander 22 Miner b Bunkland Scotland ditto rest
some of it was hard to read - hope I have transcribed correctly.
Cheers Kris :)
-
Dear Kris,
Great find..........what a journey these kids made!

Hi All,
I cant help having a little speculate now and then and to me it looks as if George made his return trip home as the eldest son, perhaps when his mother died and for the return trip brought with him the youngest brother.
Perhaps it was not the death of the mother, but and event such a marriage for one of the sisters which changed the family set up and needed his attention.
OR none of the above ;D
Excuse my wild imaginings please!
