Has anyone any information about the family of Ebenezer CHEW (up to the present if possible), living in Aston from around 1892? Until recently I have known about this family only in Northamptonshire and London. The 1901 census record (PRO ref RG 12/2889), with some annotations where I have further info, shows the following:
59 Rocky Lane, Aston Manor
1. Ebenezer CHEW, Head, M, age 45. occupation Under timekeeper, Timber Yard, worker, born Northps, Wadenhoe, Oundle
2. Susannah CHEW [née Susannah Caroline SKINNER], Wife, M, age 44, born Kent Woolwich
3. Annie E[lizabeth?] CHEW, Daur, S, age 25, occupation Warehousewoman (Button factory), worker, born London St Mary's Islington
4. Minnie R. CHEW, Daur, S, age 24, occupation Warehousewoman (Gilt Jewellers), worker, born London St Saviours Southwark
5. Daisy M[illicent?] CHEW [perhaps the Daisy Millicent married Aston, Sep Qtr 1908], Daur, S, age 18, occupation Gold finisher, Jewellers, worker, born London St Mary Islington
6. Lilian M. CHEW, Daur, S, age 16, occupation Pupil school teacher, worker, born London Kennington
7. William J[ohn] E. CHEW, Son, S, age 14, occupation Shop boy (Opticians), worker, born London Kennington
8. Frederick A[rthur[ J. CHEW, Son, S, age 12, born London St Mary Islington
9. Rosaline V[iolet] CHEW, Daur, S, age 11, born London Kilburn
10. Harold O[liver] CHEW, Son, S, age 8, born Warwickshire Birmingham St Pauls parish
I am mainly concerned to trace them forwards to the present, but if anyone has details of them from 1891, that would be a bonus. Or even 1881, as they don't appear in the 1881 census online, but seem likely I think to have been in London then nevertheless. They are not my direct line, but Ebenezer was the brother of my great-grandfather James CHEW, one of whose sons was also involved in the jewellery business but in London.
Thanks

I can't find anything in the 1871 & 1881 Census returns
Happy hunting

Thanks Darren, extremely useful. With 1881 I have tried various possibilities on the assumption that "Chew" might have been misread, looking for all Ebenezers and all Susannahs across the country with more or less the right birthdate, etc, but still have come up with nothing.
Still, they must be somewhere.
Thanks again

PS: Ebenezer (I think it was him -- "E. Chew, Son") was living at 39 Grafton Road, Islington, London, in November 1882 when his father John Baker CHEW died, being the informant of the death. I haven't found a way of searching the LDS site for the 1881 census by address, though: I would like to know who was at that address in 1881.

Hi Geoff,
Your interest in 39 Grafton St. got me going! I thought there has to be a way to find out who was living there.
Well, after much trawling...I found it!....problem is ...no Chews there!
39 Grafton St. is occupied by a James Francis and his son and Mother in Law
If you put in Sophia Guest born 1820, you will find them.
I trawled through a good many pages of Islington with no luck re: Chew.
I think they must have been omitted. :'(
Sorry,

Correction:
It was Grafton Road!

Actually you've got me quite puzzled. ??? A relative of mine by some happy chance also found 39 Grafton Road and found quite different people there! A family of GRINTERs (what kind of name is that? well you could ask the same about CHEW I suppose...), one of HOWEs, one of MEREDITHs with a HUNT, and one of NEWMANs ... quite a houseful but no CHEWs! But OK, I'll go in search of Ms GUEST as well and see what she has to offer me.
Thanks again

Hey India
Curiouser and curiouser. There are two quite separate entries under 39 Grafton Road, London, Middx. Yours is certainly there, FHL film 1314060, PRO ref. RG11, piece 0277 folio 9 page 11. The other one with all those other families is there, FHL film 1341047, PRO ref. RG11, piece 0213 folio 24 page 42. No CHEWs in either of them. Could there be more 39 Grafton Roads out there do you think???

Hi Geoff,
I expect that's possible...wish I had a London A to Z....I've only got the Brum one.
Maybe you could do a Map Quest to see how many there are!
Good Luck

Modern London A to Z gives Grafton Roads in NW5 and W3 (besides others in more outlying suburbs). I think your Grafton Road looks like the wrong one -- I looked down the road and it's all rich families. (It's the Grafton Road near Seven Sisters Road, apparently rich then, but not such a rich area these days.) The other more crowded one is labouring folk, which I think these Chews essentially were. "My" brother of the Ebenezer Chew went off to the East End as a labourer, as did another; the rest seem to have stuck around the train station (Kings Cross) where they arrived in London in the first place...
But I'm keen now to know what they did after arriving in Brum around 1892! :o
Cheers

Thanks Darren
I already know about them: John Baker CHEW and his wife Esther CHEW nee WILSON are my great-great-grandparents and Ebenezer CHEW's parents (E. is the son who moved to Aston). John OLIVER is the son of JB's first child Anne, William Baker CHEW set up his own family in London, and I suspect Janet STEVENS was the illegitimate offspring of one of them as she turns up later as an adopted child of the OLIVERs... and was shipped off back to Northants.
Thanks again

Hi Geoff
I live in Australia and I see you are looking for Chew family members. Well, Ebenezer Chew was my great great grandfather. His daughter (my maternal great grandmother) was Caroline Esther, born 14th Mar 1876, died 7th Aug 1962. She married Henry Tudor Rudder on 17th Mar 1897 in Birmingham. His first wife Ellen Whitlock died leaving him with 6 children to raise by himself.
I'd be interested to know where you fit into the family tree. You can look at my family tree in www.ancestry.com Evans/West/Knight/Vidler/Rudder/Chew I would love to hear from you again and maybe gather more information.

Hi Judy
Yes, I know about Caroline Esther, since I've been in touch with Ron and Velma Rudder in Brisbane, also descendants of hers. Ebenezer's father John Baker Chew, your 3xgreat-grandfather, was my own 2xgreat-grandfather (my great grandfather James Chew was one of Ebenezer's brothers). Send me your email address and I'll send you a gedcom taking Ebenezer's ancestry back several more generations, or if you prefer, a narrative report of the descent.
Best wishes

Hi Geoff
I idly googled Ebenezer Chew as I sometimes do, because my Dad would talk about "old Ebenezer", and your request on rootschat came up. He was my great, great grandfather through his daughter Lilian. Let me know if you would still like family information up to the present time.
Best wishes

Yes, please, Rose - I've only today registered on your reply. I have one generation of Nichollses after Lilian, and would be glad to know about later descendants.
