Who knows of a place called Auburn?? I found it on 1841 census in Narborough, Leicestershire.
I understand that it is merely an area in the village of Narborough and not a street name.
Listed is a school with 40 or so boarding boys - the name of their schoolmaster was called Mr Wills. Can anyone throw any light on this topic?? Please help.

interesting site here: I live in L'boro and there is a Ladybird book connection. :

Quote: Henry Wills was born in Narborough in 1850. He was one of eleven children to a schoolmaster who ran the Auburn House School for boys.

Hi Diddy ;) thanks for the details, it does at least establish that there was a school.
What I really would like to know about, is the school.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Dddy, I have checked out the site you mentioned re Ladybird books, also theNarbrough village site. They had the 1851census that showed the school was still there as Auburn House.
Will also try the library sometime.

Hi,
I just spoke to my hubby who has spent all his life in Narborough area, he says the only Auburn he knows of is Auburn garage which is on the main Narborough road into town. It was on the site where the Honda garage is now in Narborough.

Thank you Val,
My husband has a friend who also remembers the Auburn garage. My problem is that there is just no one around to remember as far back as I want to go!!!
Thanks anyway

To join the discussion re Auburn in Narborough, in 1881 census my great grandfather (who was a local police constable in the village) lived with his family at an address named Auburn Place. Unfortunately i am no wiser as to where exactly this was located, perhaps at the site of the present Honda garage?

Greetings totally leicester :)
Thank you for your comments. At least from this I know that Auburn Place was still there in 1881, and it wasn't just the school that was called Auburn Place. As I said, my gt gt grandfather was at school there in 1841. I'd really like to know more about the school but can find nothing. Oh well!
Are all your folks from Leicester? The majority of mine were, in fact some used to live in Granby Street at a time when one of them was a grazier there!! Near Dover Street.
Anywy thanks again

Hello Luna, yes my roots are very much in Leics and Rutland, many of my forebears being involved in agriculture work mostly in the south and east of the county, then from the1870,s onwards more in the Leicester town area. Its interesting to try and imagine the area of Granby Street as sufficiently rural to be a grazier there, times certainly change! If i discover anything further on Auburn Place i will be sure to let you know.

I Lived in Narborough until last year, now have moved to a village 2 miles away.

Found out a little more info. According to 1881 census Auburn House School had a headmaster (complete with his wife and five children) by the name of Howard, a 22 year old governess, 2 assistant masters aged 22 & 19, 24 boarders, 1 cook and 3 domestic servants so it must have been a fair sized building! Interestingly the next door address is also given as Auburn House School, but uninhabited! Not sure what to make of that. The next four households are all Auburn Place, my great grandfathers family, then the next three all have at least one frame work knitter (stocking) living in each. The last address in this row is Auburn Cottage where a stone merchants agent and his family lived with one domestic servant. Don't know how much of this you might already know or indeed how useful it is in finding out about the school, but here it is anyway! :)

Hello TL, Thanks for extra info. it's all interesting and builds up a wider picture.
In 1841 the schololmaster was Mr George Wills. One of his sons (not on 1841 census) went into publishing and he is the Wills of Hepworth and Wills of Ladybird books fame, Loughbrough. I don't have the full details to hand but somewhere i have the name of the 'Ladybird' Wills from another census.
I didn't know the name of the later headmaster. The school certainly seems to have grown in size. I'll record your info.
Thanks again

Greeting’s Folks…..
According to the Narborough Map 1889.
Auburn Place was situated on the Western side of Narborough
And to the south of the Road junction of
The Road from Narborough to Sharnford & the road to Huncote.
and before the Railway bridge which went under the road ....
Seems to be a large square of buildings with what could well be the School..
I know that in the 1960’s this site belonged to
“ Alexandra Stone Company of Croft “. ….
Hope this helps in some way.
MIKE.

Auburn Cottages were situated opposite what is now the Dovecote Pub. They did not face it but were positioned at 90 degrees from the road. Paul my husband remembers them.

Hi Val, I wonder if your husband remembers roughly when they were demolished because I'd like to see what they looked like, and the later the demolition I guess the greater chance of locating any old photographs! TL :)
-
Hi Paul remembers then being there when he was about 17. He was born in 1942 so he thinks about early 1960's they were still there. There is an industrial site about where they were. Its not far from the Honda garage mentioned earlier but on the opposite side of the road. Sorry no photos.

Having just had major shoulder surgery and am very limited on the computer, I was surfing and found this site. Lots of records hope somebody finds something useful.
On the site you can add messages, perhaps it may be worth asking if anybody has any pictures of the cottages. I will ask about when I am back on my feet again.

Hi, have still being trying to research the old school without too much success as yet, but one thing that did crop up was that the sixth form house at the old Lutterworth Grammar school site is named Auburn Place. Maybe there is some scholarly connection in this... or perhaps someone just liked the name! :)
-
Hi, for all those who have an interest in this topic. I was browsing in the local bookstore when I came across a small book with photos of Enderby, Narborough and Littlethorpe. One photo was named Auburn Road, Fosse, Narborough dated 1907,and showed a large Victorian building with several tall arched windows. It stated that it was being used as a convent at that time, but I wondered if perhaps this might have been the building that was previously the school? TL

Turns out one of my relatives, a Martha Dann, was a servant at Auburn House School in 1851. As of yet I know nothing else about the place.
-
Auburn Place in Lutterworth was built as a domestic dwelling for George Spencer, the owner of the Vedonis factory in the town, which was on Crescent Road. He died in 1947. I think I read somewhere that he left the house to the Grammar School. The house became a day nursery, after many years as the sixth form centre. I imagine that the name Auburn comes from the colour of the bricks, or maybe the trees in autumn.

I have just downloaded the 1851 Census for Waltham on the Wold. A family called COOK. The wife, Ann Cook, age 39. is listed as being born 1812 in Auburn, Leicester. Hence my curiosity. I have still to find out her maiden name.
-
George Spencer, who lived at Auburn Place in Lutterworth, had this house built for him to live in. He named it "Auburn Place" after the house he was born in back in the 1860s in Basford, Nottingham. Hope this helps. Neil in York
