I was very excited to find my grgrgrgrandfather James Albert Shields in the 1861 census on 1837online......but then discovered that his father didn't seem to be at home...although his mother was listed as married.
So..I would be really grateful if anyone might be able to find James and possibly his mother and father in the 1851 census/index if they have it.
In 1861 James and his mother were living at 18 Isabella st, Lambeth and there details were:
Eliza A. Shields 48 Married bn Southwark Surrey Dressmaker
James A. Shields 18 bn. Lambeth Tin Man
Isabella st. seems to be on the border of Lambeth and Southwark, but in 1861 no. 18 is in Lambeth registration district.
Thanks for any help anyone might be able to give me,
Best regards,
Emily

Hi Cougar and Ken,
Thanks both of you for looking for my Shields's for me. I had hoped that they might be the one family of mine in London that didn't move house every six months (or at least between each census).
I think I may now yesterday have found the birth GRO ref for James...although I couldn't read the page no. on the image very well......I think I might have to guess at it and hope that the GRO can work it out..
Thanks again for your time,
Emily

I've now recieved James's birth cert. from Oct. 1841, so I now know his fathers name, but would be interested to see if he had any brothers or sisters so very grateful if anyone could find the family in 1841 or 1851.
The address on the birth cert. is Mary St (poss. G. Mary St)
parish of st Marys, reg district Lambeth church 1st part.
And the family should be:
John George Shields aged 26 occ. Brassier(?) later he is down as Ironmonger bn Lambeth
Eliza Ann Shields aged 27ish bn Southwark
(ages as per 1841)
in 1851 there should be a James Albert aged 9 living with them
Thanks for any help,
Emily

Hi Cougar,
Thanks so much for looking for my Shields' again....and for finding them in 1841. It's nice to have a brother for James, he was one of the few people I had in my tree with no siblings.
Wonder where they can have got to in 1851?.....it'll have to wait until a more complete name index I guess.
Thanks again for your help,
Emily

They weren't in Bethnal green or Whitechapel in 1851

Hello Emily
I'm doing a bit of housekeeping and wondering if this older request has been resolved in the meantime or you are still looking for the information? If the latter, do you have any further information to hand?
If I don't hear from you in a while I'll assume this is resolved and move it to the 'completed' section.
Regards
Biker :)

Hi Biker,
Sorry for not replying sooner...had to check whether or not I had actually found them yet...
and I have found them in a 1851 census index...but haven't been able to access the actual census details so I would be grateful if anyone could provide the address details and etc if they are able?
What I have is reference: HO107, piece 1570, folio 373
John George Shields b.1815 Surrey pres. head
Eliza A Shields b.1816 Surrey, wife
James A Shields b. 1842 Surrey, son.
Grateful thanks to anyone who can tell me where they are living.
Happy New Year everyone,
Emily :)

Thank you Reyz for the further details..it's strange that his mother seems to age by more than 10 years between each census.... :)
And thanks to everyone else for looking for them before.
This lookup is now complete I think.
Best regards,
Emily

just remember the images are not always clear and if I couldn't read the gas? fitter - the age might not have been spot on either.
Do you want me to go back and check for you?

Hi Cougar,
Thanks for offering to check the images again...but I have her date of birth from her christening record on the IGI (she was born in 1816..so she got it right in 1851, but not 1841 or 1861) so its probably not worth it as it must just be a mistake by her or the enumerator each time..I'm not sure whether or not she could actually write herself :)
Happy New Year,
Emily
