Hi

According to Kelly's Directory N & E Ridings 1913 Part 1 it lies between 160 and 172 Alwyn Terrace in Middlesbrough (page 208). You can see this by searching

http://www.historicaldirectories.org

Good luck

Hello

On the 1911 Census Search page select the "Place" tab. Then, if you enter "Wye" in the "Street" box and "Yorkshire North Riding" in the "County" box and "Middlesbrough" in the "Residential place" box and click the "Search" button there should be 43 hits for Wye Street.

Whoops - now my sight is failing!

From the 1913 Kelly's Wye Street, Middlesbrough seems to cross

Albyn Terrace at 160-172 and
Primrose Terrace at 177-189.

Unfortunately none of these streets appear in Middlesbrough on the modern streetmap and I do not seem to be able to find any early maps of Middlesbrough on the web.

Sorry to be so unhelpful

Hello

Have a look on this site ....

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/IndexMapPage2.aspx

and enter "Middlesbrough" in the "Search" box and enter Coordinates 450200 and 520000 and then hit "Go".

When the first (blank) map appears, scroll down and select map number 9 (of 15) - 1923 Durham 1:10,560. When that map appears on screen after a few seconds, use the zoom facility on the left hand side and click on the box next to the top one. Wye Street should now be visible in the same vicinity as Avon Street, Lune Street and Severn Street.

Thank you Posteria and well done.  That looks like it and I think it is in North Ormesby.  Now I cannot see Primrose Terrace or Albyn Terrace so I better apologise for being quite confusing.

The area seems to have been heavily redeveloped - Borough Road and Marton Road still follow the previous line but Grange Road had developed some wriggles and the area of Wye Road now has a completely different layout.

All the best

Hello there, just noticed this thread,

I live really close to this area, there is a remaining terrace on the Borough Road/Marton Road crossroads, which borders Severn Street. If you like I could check it out for you and see if any signage for Wye Street remains?

Em

*** Edit*** forgot to add, I have a camera so if you want any photos of the area as it is now, I can help with that too

Hello,

OK I just popped over for you. There are Wye Street signs on both sides of the terrace on the junction with Borough Road  ;D Alas they are not the original signs, they are white plastic ones which must cover the originals.

An original sign for Avon Street (the next street up) remains however,so I could get a photo of that so you would know the style of the Wye Street sign would have looked like?

Wye Street is now just a gap in the Borough Road terrace, they have blocked it off from traffic using a tree and some fencing, you can walk down it however to access the new housing estate (St John's Gate) behind it.

If you want any photos just let me know and I'll take my camera down there (I left the house with out it today, sorry).

Hi Stu,  :)

As Gobbo and Em say the area has changed.

I was a driver for Binns fourty odd years ago.  :(  ;D

I have a 1928 Ward's Directory for Wye Street if that's any help.

Hi all,

I too have  been looking at this area, once known as the "Rivers Estate".  Can anyone help me with the where abouts of Primrose Terrace?  I think it could have been in this locality.

Many thanks,
Ann

PS.  Middlesbrough Archives may have some old pics

Hi George,

Thank you for this, I can remember as a kid Grange Road in the 1950's, I didn't take much notice then of the house names etc though.  It may have been the Marton Road end as the Census states Exchange Ward.

Once again many thanks.

I have a 1953 map of Middlesbrough and Wye Street is definitely in Middlesbrough, not North Ormesby.
I was born in North Ormesby and Ormesby Beck seperates North Ormesby from Middlesbrough, hope
the attached photo helps. :-)

Hello! I've done a lot of research on the Terraces of M'bro & Primrose Terrace was part of the block just after Emily ST, built over the site of the Grange Farm
