1841 Census Ref. No. HO107/261/4/7 Devon, Rackley or Raddey
William Bradford 10 M L (man/manual lab) Yes
Re the above entry, - when I visited the record office last year I thought I would be able to sort out the village from maps when I got home - wrong - would anyone kindly try to find where William was at the time of the 1841 census please? Also I didn't bother to write down the names of the rest of the household either - would someone be able to tell me who they are please?
Thank you

Braddy - that reference doesn't bring up anything, I'm afraid, and the only William Bradford I can see who was 10 wasn't a manual labourer :-\ :-\
Are you sure of the age ?

A William BRADFORD aged 10 was in South Molton District in 1841 and is shown in 1851 as a 19 year old apprentice, born Cadeleigh, living with a John SELLEY (Mason) and family in Dreyford village.
He was baptised 22 May 1831 at Cadeleigh, son of William & Mary BRADFORD.

Hi Mum44,
Sorry - perhaps I've got the reference wrong, I thought it stated M/L tho which I assumed meant manual labourer. Thanks for trying.
Hi DOB7,
Yes - that's the William Bradford I'm descended from and all the info you have is correct - it's the 1841 census bit that I may have got confused - but it's what I scribbled down at the time - I've still got the scribble. I didn't record who else was in the household and I can't find a Rackley or Raddy so that must be wrong. Thanks for your efforts tho.

It could be Rattery or Raddon? Raddon is only about 4 miles from Cadeleigh.

Hi Braddy,
Here is the 1841 census entry. The normal ones are FS (Female Servant) MS (Male Servant) I expected your entry would be MS but no it definitely is ML - (not one we normally see - Male Labourer perhaps) I expect mistress for Mary meant mistress of the house as Samuel senior was probably widowed therefore his daughter in law ran the home. It was crossed out as it was not an occupation and therefore did not belong there.

Thanks very much Kris,
That's the entry - sorry I got the reference muddled up. I assumed ML was manual labourer but don't know for sure. In 1841 his family were also in West Worlington "Part of Prior House - Cottage on side" William 35, Mary 31, Mary 11, John 8, Sarah 6, Grace 5, Edward 3. Would you be able to confirm their Ref please - HO/107/261/5/10 - it's probably that I don't understand how to record the Ref No correctly. One last plea - do you know where Rackley is in relationship to West Worlington?
Thank you

Hi Braddy,
HO107/261/17 Folio 5 Page 11
There is an extra number in the 1841 refs. Piece 261 Book 17 (definitly page 11 not 10)
It doesn't say prior house. I think it says Part of the Porr House
I suspect Rackley is the name of the property - next door is Cottonhay
top of the page Part of Little Litworthy
It is only 2 pages before the family so they are living very close.
See if you can find it in the maps
Cheers Kris :D

Thanks Kris,
Apart from West worlington I can't find any of the other places mentioned on "Old Maps"- they must be names of houses or property as you suggest. Thanks for your invaluable help - I am closer than I was before this request for help - I love Rootschat.

Hi Braddy,
I believe we are related and may have had contact with your brother, John Bradford. I come from a Bradford line where we share William and Mary from the early 1800's. My grandmother was the daughter of Augustin Bradford.
Are you still a user of this forum?
Thanks,
Richard Mullaney

Hi Richard - I am the John you spoke to From Eileen's when you were recently over here, Ian John Bradford but for some reason only ever called John. Hope you are all keeping well.
