Hi faloon,

I have a couple of books about old Hull - any particular pubs you're interested in?

Hello Faloon,
The books I have are not specifically about Hull pubs and taverns, but both mention a few names.
From one of the books, "Aspects of Hull", a document dated 19 December 1672 relates to the foundation of an innkeeper's guild in Hull, and mentions various people,
Elizabeth Boys at the Kings Head, High Street,
Joseph Towerson, Cross Keys, Market Place,
William Riley, White Horse, Market Place,
and mentions other inns, but no names,
the George, George Yard,
Seven Stars, Mytongate,
Reindeer, Market Place,
Post Boy, Whitefriargate, (later renamed the Wool Pack, the Lion and Lamb)
Apparently, so one of the books says, "in 1729 the Brewster Sessions were instituted, enabling Justices of the Peace to regulate the granting of licences"
If you're looking for lists of inkeepers etc., I think your best bet is to contact the Hull City Archives - city.archives@hullcc.gov.uk
Although from looking at the website, it appears to be closed until later in the year when everything will be moving to the new Family History Centre.
Good luck,
Yorkslass

Get in touch with Carnegie Heritage Centre in Hull, Hull's Local Studies and Hull's Archives are currently closed as they are combining and moving to a larger building.
Carnegie is based on Anlaby road, there website is here, http://www.carnegiehull.co.uk/
I am researching Hull pubs, and Paul Gibson, local historian/author is one of the team here and really helpful. The library has a number of files on Hull pubs past and present including histories and other useful bits of information.
Paul Gibson's previous books have included,
Lost Pubs of Hull
Hull Then and Now
The Anlaby Road Book
Hull pubs and breweries
Hull the 2nd Selection
The other option is to email me at (*) and I will send infor to you to read as I have histories for quite a lot of the Hull pubs.
Here are some nice sites, they are PDF's and might take a second to load but are great, and printable!
