Where can I find a list of RC churches in Crossmaglen around the years 1840-60?
-
I think at that time there was only one Catholic Church in Crossmaglen and it was just known as the Roman Catholic Church Crossmaglen.
I have been researching around this area and time too looking for ancestors and this is the only Catholic Church I have found. In Emerald Ancestors it is the only one listed too.
However today I think there are three:
St. Patrick's Catholic Church
Newry Road Crossmaglen T: 3086 1208
St. Brigid's Catholic Church
Glassdrummond Road Crossmaglen T: 3086 1270
Sacred Heart Catholic Church
Shelagh Crossmaglen T: 3086 1208
I don't know if this helps.

Thanks for that info.
If you look at the "Crossmaglen Catholic church" in pictures on, for example, Armagh genealogy sites, it's the same one as you see on the Armagh Diocese site and which is called St Patrick's. It was built in 1835. Rather a monstrous building and enormous for the village of the time, I would say.
At least it would make it more likely that all religious ceremonies were performed there. I mean, if it were just the "chapel" quoted in Lewis's Topo. then you might go further afield for your wedding (maybe).
Having said that, why can't I find the marriage I'm looking for???

It could be that the church records you need no longer exist or are in local custody. Have you looked at section on church records in Armagh Resources here?

Yes you are right St Patrick's would have been the Roman Catholic Church in Crossmaglen at the time as it celebrated its 150 anniversary in 1985.
I get the impression that the majority of people who live in Crossmaglen are Catholics.
