I am seeking to find the birth certificate of my great great granddad. I can find nothing to go on in ancestry.com.
Hamment Stevenson (maybe Hampord and even Stephenson but family name is Hamment) born Greytree, Ross Herefordshire? 1816. Married 17.8.1840. One census showing him as Stephenson and a 25 year old apprentice.
He married a Mary Ann Crane from Suffolk. Had two or perhaps three children. ... Hamment 1843 and Fanny 1844 and I wonder about an Mary Ann 1846 .. born Llangarron or Ross. Hamment Stephenson Senior died 1847.
As he is only in one census, I cannot trace his ancestors and Mary Ann remarried, as far as I can ascertain, a Daniel Wintle b 1816 and they called the children his but with the surname of Stevenson... however, I do not think they actually "tied the knot" until the time of David's death! They had a daughter Pamela Wintle b 1850. I found marriage Ap-Jn 1854 and a death for Daniel exactly same date! They lived in Glewston, Herefordshire.
I completely lose the family but suspect that Mary Ann may have died but Pamela was put to live with her father's brother.
My great grandad appears in 1851 as Hamment Stevens living in Ross as an apprentice and states birthplace is Langarren. All through the generations, there has been a Hamment Stevenson.
However, it is frustrating being unable to go back further than 1816.
With such an unusual christian name, I wonder if there might be a way of tracking down the birth certificate?
Any suggestions would be most gratefully received. Ann

Hi Firstome
I think this request will do better on the Herefordshire board - I can't see a link to the previous request, so I'll split and move it for you.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi Firstome,
Had a quick look and I can't find anything. There is someone else looking for (I guess) the same person here http://www.herefordsurnames.homecall.co.uk/s.htm
Sorry I couldn't be more help,
Spider

Me again!
I take it you don't yet have the marriage cert from 1840 - it would show his father's name and the witnesses might be family?
Have you looked on the Welsh censuses too, as sometimes the border areas come under Welsh counties.
Is this a traveller family - the unusual names might suggest that - in which case they might have been a bit reluctant to register events - although some would say that's a naughty generalisation on my part!
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Thank you for your comments. As my great great grandad was born prior to birth certificates being available, I guess I should try getting the marriage certificate. I have a note he married 17.08.1840 so I will hunt down the data right now. I have searched the Welsh area too. Living in Wales myself, I appreciate the proximity.
Regarding the travellers, I find this rather amusing as, on my paternal side, my great grandmother was a Romany Traveller. At least her family recorded all there events in one local church and have been easy to track down. Discovering this has been quite a surprise to my family. I wonder if we can stand having yet another branch being Romany Travellers! he he Ann

My money would be on their both being from Suffolk originally. Ross, Herefordshire is where the Stevensons were as relative newlyweds in 1841, but both husband and wife are enumerated as not born in county.

You might well be right - on the other hand, Ross is one of those awkward places that's right on the boundary of Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire, so he might just have been confused!
I haven't looked at other censuses - I wonder why Ann thinks he was born Greytree?
-
He died too soon to be on other censuses, but I suspect that the "Greytree" bit may come from the indexing of the 1841 census (Greytree hundred).
The 1851 census reveals that Mary Ann Crane was born in Cratfield, which is consistent with the Blything RD for the marriage.

Anna (((MANY HUGS))) ... thank YOU so much! I have found my great great grandparents a mystery from start to finish! I had tried Suffolk in an endeavour to track Hamment's parentage a I thought like you both, that he said where he lived and not where he was born. Then, Mary Ann Crane has proved a problem too! In he 1851 Census she calls herself Mary A Wintle born Cratfield Suffolk. The children Hamment and Fanny Stevenson are declared as being the children of Daniel Wintle and there is a Pamela Wintle aged one year. So, She must have known this Daniel in about 1849 but they never married until 1854 when Daniel died. Mary Ann is not too good on the truth. Yes, the 1841 census, which is unreadable on my PC has a front page stating Civil Parish Ross, cou nty Herefordshire and Hundred Greytree. Hamment's surname is spelt Stephenson and age 25. I cannot verify as the handwritten page is too feint to read.
Anyway, I will send off for that marriage certificate and let you dear helpful friends know how I get on. Thanks once again, Ann

Oops... I should mention that always there is at the back of my mind what my mother told me and what my aunty told my cousin too. One of our ancestors ran off with the cook or house servant. I keep wondering if they did not want to reveal where they originated. Well, the marriage certificate witnesses might give us a clue there! Ann

I just wanted you to know that I did send off for the copy marriage certificate at the end of March "http://WWW.gro.gov.UK/gro/content/certificates/
" but never received a copy. I think I must find out how to write off for a copy as I am not happy with online dealings.

Have you phoned the GRO to chase it up? Has the money gone out of your account? It must be so frustrating not to have the cert arrive.
-
Thank you so much for your concern. The money never left my account, at least not a few days ago when I once again checked.
I do not know what went wrong, but I will try again. I was so excited when I ordered and was looking forward to receiving it.
thanks, Ann

I have now received the Marriage certificate of Hamment and here his name is spelt Hammont and his bride Mary Ann Crane. They were both married in Suffolk but one rotten thing is that Hammont declares his father is a famer and Mary Ann her father is an agricultural labourer but no parents were present at the wedding. One a couple who marked with a cross to witness the church wedding. Toured the census as have no idea of Hammont father's first name and also tried the witness couple, but without success. Of course they may not have been around in 1841.
Thanks for your help and interest.
