Title: 1841/1851 lookup please
Post by: chris.corrall on Thursday 17 February 05 22:12 GMT (UK)
Could someone please help find William Fuller WEST on either the 1841 or 1851 census.
I have his birth cert showing a date of birth of 9 December 1837 at 2 Brighton Place Cottages.
William's mother & informant for the cert was Harriet WEST & his father is shown as William FULLER , occupation butcher.
I would like to find when & if a marriage took place but have been unsuccesful so far.
Many thanks
Chris Corrall

Chris, the only marriage of a William Fuller to a Harriet I could find is below, but it doesn's look very promising (the index only goes to 1837)

 from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Rotherfield, East Sussex,  Date:  1 Jun 1827:
 William FULLER, bach
 Harriet BRIDGER, sp botp (B)
Extra Information: Sarah WESTON; John WOOD;

Jane

Hi Jane
Thanks for the info. The birth cert definitely says Harriet WEST so I think this is probably not the William FULLER I am looking for.
Thanks anyway
Chris

Hi Paula

Yes - stupidly left Brighton out of the message! It was in the Brighthelmston registration district.
Thanks

Hi Paula

Many thanks for that info. I have received William West's marriage cert in the intervening period which states that he was illegitimate. It also gives his age which means his dob was 1839 so the William West with his aunt in Kemp Town is a possibility. The address on the cert is Mighell Street which I think is in the Kemp Town area too?
Think I need to find out more on this one.
Thanks again for your help
Chris

Hi Chris
although it say's nephew it might have been her son,his date of birth was 1837.because she wasn't married she might have said he was her nephew to 'save face'.

Chris

Mighell Street was (and a small part still is) in the Carlton Hill area, probably less than five minutes walk away from the centre of the Kemp Town area. Most of it was where the American Express building is now located, but a small part still remains just to the north.

And most of the other places mentioned (Brighton Place, Marine Parade, Albion Hill, The Level) are all about the same distance away, easily within a "five or ten minute walk" radius.
