Title: Tallow - Birth or Catholic baptism records?
Post by: Leanne68 on Friday 27 March 09 12:29 GMT (UK)
Good afternoon everyone,

I'd appreciate any help or pointers for the following query:

Another board member has very kindly found a marriage record in Jersey for an ancestor of mine, which recorded that she was born in about 1821 in Tallow, Waterford.  The family would have been Catholic and her father's name was John.

There is something of a puzzle to this though :
Later records in the Cape Colony, have her recorded as Mary CAPLES, but the marriage record from Jersey shows her surname as KEPLISS.  She was not literate at the time and one might be able to explain the difference to accents/pronunciation/maybe a french speaking official in Jersey.

I'd very much like to try and trace a birth or baptism record for Mary in the Tallow civil records or Church baptsim records, and would need to be on the lookout for either of the surnames.  Any advice would be most welcome.

best wishes

Hi Leanne,

I think you'd better consider adding more names to your list ...

Griffith's Primary Valuation of Ireland doesn't list any names commencing with Cap or Kep in Waterford but does list Capelis, Caplis in other counties.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for the insight into the valuation details.  Having worked my way through all the Australian and Cape Colony ancestors, i'm finding myself, more and more facing brickwalls back in the "mother country".  I guess i should count myself fortunate to have been able to trace nearly my entire ancestral tree back to the beginning of the 1800's.

best wishes
Leanne

Hi Leanne,

Just thought I'd comment that for a catholic baptism in Tallow there is nothing for it but to visit the NLI in Dublin to see the parish records on microfilm - or commission expensive research.

I too have an ancestor born Tallow 1830 and wrote over a year ago to the current Tallow catholic parish priest.  No reply.  In February 2009 I wrote to another priest responsible for several parishes including Tallow.  He did reply and said he'd check but that was the last I heard.  I expect, with the best will in the world, they have little time to dedicate to chasing Irish ancestors and I certainly won't pester.

It took me ages to find their addresses on the net, but still, at least I tried.
