Title: Horrigan family St Pancras
Post by: anderton on Thursday 26 March 09 21:58 GMT (UK)
Please can anyone help me researching the above family?  Margaret Horrigan was my great great grandmother, but I'm having trouble finding out much about her family as the name is spelt in so many different ways.  I have Margaret's Birth Certificate stating she was born 1 April 1841, with the informant recorded as the Governor of St Giles Workhouse - implying she was born there?

I'd be very grateful for any help, thanks Anderton

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Is any mother named on the birth cert?  Who did Margaret marry

There is an 1841 entry for a Margaret Harrigan living in Poplar but parents were Samuel & Mary and Margaret was 5mths old.  The 1841 was taken on 6th June so she would only have been 2mths old at that time.

Hello and welcome,
I was just going to post same queries as Carole and was also going to ask what definite information do you have about Margaret (census, marriage etc).

hi Carole and Heyward
Thanks for your prompt replies - as you can see, I'm new to rootschat but am really impressed that I've had two replies already!

Margaret's Mother is given as Margaret McCanty(?) - best I can do to decipher the surname!  Father is given as Dennis, a labourer, but the strange thing is, as I said earlier, tho I can't decipher his name as yet, the informant re Margaret's birth was the Governor of St Giles Workhouse!?

I'd be grateful for any info at all,

Many thanks and regards

Anderton

Hi

Was McCanty her mothers maiden name and her father was Dennis Horrigan?

Yes - sorry Carole I should have made that clear.  Margaret went on to marry a John Shepherd Keho. Thanks

Does her marriage certificate have Dennis as her father too.
I am wondering if the birth certificate indicates Margaret as a single mother or is McCanty (?) a maiden name?

There is a Dennis Horrigan death in St Giles in 1848.

also a couple of Male Harragan/Horrigan births - plus a Dennis Harragn birth 1846- perhaps the death in 1848.

That looks very promising  :D

hello anderton, this is my first message on rootschat having joined this week.
and what a surprise to find the names of my great grandparents in print.
John shepherd keho and margaret keho nee harrigan (sometimes harigan)
were my dad's maternal grandparents.  i dont want to raise your hopes as i dont know
anything of margaret's background. i do have the couples marriage certificate, showing
denis a shoemaker was the name of maragaret's deceased father, also james harigan
a witness. possibley i have been of some help, i hope so...all the best.

Hi Great Gran - pleased to hear from you!  Margaret Horrigan (or all the other variants!) was  my great great grandmother on my Mum's side!  I unfortunately have very little information on them, hence my message on Rootschat! Their daughter, Eliza Keho was my Grandad's mother - he was William James Bedford. hence my Mum was Margaret Bedford before marriage.  Would love to hear from you again if you have any more information at all - now need to work out how we're related! Regards Eileen aka Anderton.  I think we're second cousins once removed but I could be wrong!

hello anderton i had hoped to write sooner though could only say that i havn't any info. re. margaret's forebears. i knew her name by having seen it on the original marriage certificate which had been kept in the family by one or other relative through the years. eileen if you have any questions that you feel that i may be able to help you with. do ask. i will gladly do so. hopefully i will get the hang of replying on rootschat. must admit i have been going round in circles this evening trying to reply to yours.
