Hi maltesers,
I have checked the Australian Electoral Rolls..........there is no William McDowell Downie listed..........however there are lots of William Downie's.....and they are all over the country, which would make it hard to pinpoint him.

I have also checked the Australian war records at the Australian Archives site http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx
but there doesn't appear to be a match there.

NSW BDM's at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm have no William Downie dying up to 1978. However they do have a number of William Downie's marrying.....you would possibly need to get certificates or transcriptions from a transcription service to work out from his parent's details which (if any) are your William. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,300394.0.html

QLD deaths only go up to 1929 https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/DeaIndexQry.m

Tasmanian deaths would not be covered either. http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=8

Victorian BDM is on line at https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/home.

Finally from me, The Ryerson Index lists 3 William Downie deaths http://ryersonindex.net/search.php

There are shipping records which is my achilles heel (eyes glaze over at the thought).....and they are listed at the top of the Australian Board under resouces, as well as cemetery records (listed at the same place).......but until you know where he lived that would be anightmare to tackle.

Cheers
Susie

W.A. deaths go up to 1953, and he is not listed there as a death or a Marriage http://www.bdm.dotag.wa.gov.au/W/wa_registry_indexes.aspx

..in case it helps ..the 'National Archives of Aus.' has a William Downie b 29/7/1912 Uddingston Scotland.  He enlisted at Paddington NSW  ..nok Rose Downie.

NSW BMD shows one Rose Downie d 1942 (reg no 289/1942.)  'Joy Murrin's Transcription Services' (on-line) could 'search' the d cert. for abt $15 ...it may reveal husband's full name ...and name/ages of their chn.
