Hello everyone, I'm new to family research and tracing my family name has led me to the villages of Gretton and Cottingham in the early to mid-1800s.
This is an area of the country I know absolutely nothing about, and I wondered if anyone could lead me to some online resources about this area.
The family name I am interested in is INKLE/INCKLE and variants, but I just wanted to build up a general idea of the Gretton and Cottingham area at the time.
The family seem mainly to be involved in agricultural labour at this time, although I do have a Thomas Inkle, parish clerk and sexton of St Mary Magdelene, Gretton in 1851.
Any help at all will be appreciated, thank you in advance :)

A quick Google of the two village names will bring up what look like excellent village websites, each of which have history sections.

Hi Filiem/Pennie.
Welcome to Rootschat Filiem. :)
As your relative was a Church Warden/Sexton he maybe mentioned
in the Churchwarden accounts for Gretton if they survived.
You can contact the N.R.O. at http://www.rootschat.com/links/05ob
to see if they did.

Thank you Pennie and Seahall, and thanks for the welcome :)
I made a mistake, Thomas Inkle was sexton of St James church in Gretton (not Mary Magdelene) sorry about that! Getting my churches confused.
I have located some great websites about the 2 villages.
I have also e-mailed a lady at the Gretton Local History Society to see if she can help me in any way. As a lot of my ancestors were baptised, married and buried at St James, if would be excellent to somehow access the parish/church records. Also to get photographs and/or inscriptions of the burial monuments. I live quite a distance away but am looking to visit the area at some point in the future.
What would churchwarden accounts consist of? I have never come across these before ( I am a newbie at this ;D). Sounds very interesting though, shall have to look into that more. Thank you for the information.
Thanks for your help,

Hi Em.
My own Gt Gt grandfather was a Sexton.
In the Churchwarden accounts he was paid for ringing the bells.
Also for digging the graves and other duties.

Hi Sandy,
My sexton is my Gx4 Grandfather's brother, he appears to have been a shepherd in earlier records (mainly his children's baptisms) then has made a career change later in life to be a sexton.
Had a quick look at the Northamptonshire CC Record Office site you kindly linked me to, and it does state that they hold certain churchwardens records. Fingers crossed they will have what I need.
The 1851 census lists him as "Parish Clerk and Sexton", and he died in 1866.
The bell-ringing sounds fun, not so sure about the grave-digging, however!

Hi Filiem,
I too have Thomas Inckle (born 1807 Gretton) in my family tree.
He was my 2nd great grandfather.
I was wondering if you found any more information ?
I have his parents as John Inckle and Alice Day, but could not trace the Inckle line any further back.
Dave.

Hi Dave, no, I'm sorry, that is as far back as i have got with that particular line, although I have bits and bobs of information about the Inckle / Inkles going forward from there. If I can help you then just give me a shout.

Hi Filiem,
I share your interest in all things Inkle/Inckles/Incles etc.
Most current leads can be traced back to John and Alice Inkle who were married(1788) and lived in Gretton. John was my G-G-G-grandfather.
On the Gretton website is a photo of the White Hart pub where John's grandson William (a shepard) lived with his family of 7 children.
I believe John is also the root for your other enquiry re William of Fiskerton.
If you contact me by PM I may be able to provide a draft family tree

Hi Deman,
That's excellent, thank you very much :) John and Alice are my GGGGG (phew) Grandparents straight through my paternal line. I will contact you through PM later today when I have a bit more time.
This was the very first part of my tree I started looking at last year and have somewhat left it of late, I am related to John and Alice through their son John (b abt 1796). It would be interesting to compare notes.
