James LAMB born c1920 NZ died 4 July 1956 when he was fatally wounded in
a mine disaster.
The mine was McDONALD MINE situated Waikokowai New Zealand.

Would appreciate any info relating to his death, newspapers, obits perhaps even a photo & also about the mine itself.
Thankyou,

Hi
Unfortunately PapersPast's dates, don't extend to the 1950's.
Have you tried a "google" search for information ? (Mine accidents etc. ?)
Archives NZ (Wellington) - may have a coroner's report on the accident ?
You could perhaps try Hamilton Library - they may have easy access to info about incidents that occurred in "their patch" ?

Thanks Lu.....
Did try dear 'ole google.... there were some mine disasaters but not the one my friend requires & as you say PapersPast doesn't extend to 1950's.
Will give Archives NZ Wellington a try...also Hamilton library.
Feel lucky...so thank you for above...very helpful

Hi Tiff
My maternal grandparents settled in Waikokowai when they arrived from Scotland in 1926/7. My mother and her siblings were pupils at Waikokowai School. I found references to them and photographs of them in the "Waikokowai School 80th Jubilee" Booklet from 2 March 1985. I read my copy in the NZRoom at the Canterbury Pub.Library. In it are articles on the history of both the Renown and McDonald mines. At the end of the article on the McDonald Mine the writer records the death of three men incl Jim Lamb jnr in 1955. ( Your date was 1956)
There are mentions and photos of other Lambs, namely Mary, Gail, Shirley, Kevin, Jimmy Lamb and family and a Mr S. There was also a Mr Mick Lamb who sustained a neck injury in an accident in the Renown mine on 31 August 1955.
Would advise you to track it down at the Library

Jim Lamb is one & the same...thanks for correct date. Thanks you also for other christian names etc.
Will try & get into Christchurch library.
Much appreciated

Hello CherieLamb,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Not sure what information you have or want but a previous poster some years ago was wanting to know about the McDonald mine.
The link below leads to the document held @ Wellington Archives relating to the Coroner's inquest. A look up by a Rootschatter could be requested.

Hi
Not at home at the moment. There is a good museum at Huntly which has extensive coverage of Huntly's mining history. Perhaps the volunteers there could.help you.

Will try there

Hi Cherie,
As you have traced back to Peter Lamb, is the obituary above about your ancestor??
Minniehaha.
-
Hi Cherie,
I can get the file from Archives for you, see Minniehaha’s reply #11 above.

I doubled checked
And I can trace back to James Lamb 1780 and Mary Raferty(Rafhey) 1783-1850
Who had Michael Peter Lamb 1809-1874 who married Margaret Mc Ardle 1811-1880 who had Patrick Lamb 1829-1896 married Bridget Victory 1834-1906 they had Peter Lamb 1855 who married Ellen Earl 1861 and I can follow back to me from there but can't go past James 1780 and Mary Raferty 1783-1850 and Ellen Earl 1861 that line stops too.
I'm not computer savvy but just trying to trace for medical reasons and h sure where to form here.
Any help greatly appreciated or hints and tips
Regards Cherie

Hi Cherie,
If those names you have put up.......
"Michael Peter Lamb 1809-1874 who married Margaret Mc Ardle 1811-1880 who had Patrick Lamb 1829-1896 married Bridget Victory 1834-1906 they had Peter Lamb 1855 who married Ellen Earl 1861 and I can follow back to me from there but can't go past James 1780 and Mary Raferty 1783-1850 and Ellen Earl 1861 that line stops too."
.....were not in New Zealand, you should consider putting up a request in Rootschat England* to make your enquiries.
*Or Scotland, whichever is appropriate.

Hi again.
If you have found this post when researching for information about McDonald's Mine, I have grabbed a couple of recent articles that are yet to be covered by PAPERSPAST.
There is/was winable coal under most of the greater Huntly district. With various mining operations either side of the Waikato River. One mine even extending under the river with pit heads on both sides.
Further west there were more mines some being large, to feed industries including the Huntly Power station. McDonald's mine, I believe, was a smaller one, managed for many years by the Glen Afton Coaleries. Not long after leaving school, I went down one of the privately owned smaller workings, with a group of farming lads. Not too far away was an opencast mine leased by farming relatives.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply.
I did have other Family who worked in the mines and my Great Uncle Jerry still involved in one way or another.
Just no one to actual ask history but I plan to go to Huntly and check out any records they hold
Thanks again

Hi Cherie,
Please note the kind offer made @ reply #17.....
Perhaps you could acknowledge this and let the poster know whether you wish to take up the offer or not. ;)
Minniehaha.

Hi
Unsure what I would be replying too I can't see #17 in anything I viewed
Cherie

Hi Cherie,
The replies to your original post are numbered, i.e. 'Reply#2' etc.
In 'Reply#17' I had offered to go to Archives and get images of the Coroner's inquest for James LAMB which Minniehaha had found.
If you're interested in this file I can get it for you.

Hi Spades
I'm not computer confident at all so sorry for that.
I asked My Dad if he was interested in that information he said yes.
Originally my Nana had the paper work but it was stolen apparently
Would be fantastic to read it

High again.
When I arrived home I went looking for the Huntly Mining museum site. Easier for me to view a computer screen, than my phone. I did not supply a link because they apparently have just shifted location to a building in Huntly, and are yet to unpack exhibits for display, and reestablish their archived heritage material. But their volunteers are happy to receive requests, and will advise how they are able to help. Therefore before a planned visit, I suggest you search out their latest news as to where they are at, via their web site, or social media pages.
Alan.
PS Come that time, feel free to PM me and I will help, where able, as I live in the Waikato.
-
Hi Alan
Thank you so much
I'll look them up before traveling over there
