Hello Jo

The Manchester and Lancashire Family History website www.mlfhs.org.uk has the maps for sale and how they join up with each other . Have a look at the bookshop section .

You can go on the website of www.artus-familyhistory.com/source/Early%20Maps.html and click on early maps and in particular Manchester 1874 . Just to the right of Strangeways you will see Ashley Lane and it gives a good idea of the area .
Good luck.
Eric

Hi Jo,

(wrote this just before Eric posted!)

that is such bad luck, Ashley Lane starts on the NW map and crosses over to finish on the NE that you have  ???  So for the whole street you need the Manchester NW as well.

On the top left rectangle of your NE map, find the words ST MICHAEL WARD in large print, go left and you see the famous St Michaels Flags (Angel Meadow). Just above there you've got the word 'Ashley' and the end of the lane which leads on to Portland St.

I have the street index booklets published by the M/cr and Lancs FHS, which really help with finding places   www.mlfhs.org.uk

Her dad was called John Ratican and I can't find anything for him, do you know if they had to register?  ::)

Hello , My mother was born in Back Pump Street, I wonder if that was behind the Pump Street you mention? It was off Oldham Road , near Gunson Street. If it is nearby then there is a photo available from M/C City Local Image Collection . She was born in 1896 and her father worked for Harlands Undertakers.I`m sure there is more than one Pump St but I thought it worth a mention. Viktoria

Hi,I have just looked on the Manchester (NE) 1891 map and it shows that Pump street ran from Rochdale road all the way through to Oldham road, I must have the right Pump street because I have put 47 Pump street in the 1881 census and it said the district of St George. Thanks for your help Jo :)

Hi me again now I am not sure just been looking on the map and seen another Pump street with quite a large street going through it called Osborn st so I am not sure again which one it would be I don't know which one would be classed as St George :-\

These districts and sub-districts are so confusing, i can never work it out. I get registration and ecclesiastical districts confused, oh and guess what, there is a third Pump st on the Manchester NE map!

As far as I have been able to work out from census and certs of my own, the St George registration district is the bit we've been talking about, between Oldham Rd and Rochdale Rd.  I never heard of "St George" district when I was actually living in Manchester - just thought of that area as part of Ancoats, on the border with Collyhurst.  So I think your Pump St is the one you first thought of, between Oldham & Rochdale Rd.

The Pump St by Osborne st is near St Patricks RC church on Livesey St, and I would call that area part of Miles Platting myself.

The third Pump St is tiny and is in the New Cross/Holt Town area at the Beswick end of Ancoats.

And looking at Viktoria's Back Pump St on a later map (isn't on the 1891) it doesn't seem to be at the back of any of them!  :o  Its at the back of Naylor St and Gunson St.

If we can find the Raticans in 1891 really, might settle the matter one way or the other...

 :) Barbara

Hi, I am also looking for some info on Mary Ann Ratican from the ancoats area who was my Grandads Mums Mum. Just wondering is it the same Mary Ann Ratican who married Henry Shannon.
Any info would be great, thanks.

Amanda and Goldy
Fisherman37 hasn't been online since April.
I've just sent him/her a PM to alert him/her re your presence in case he/she has notifications turned off.

Amanda, welcome to Rootschat.
PM is a private message - you can't use that system until you have three posts, so just answer this one and then another with maybe more info on Mary Ann and family, and you'll be OK.

Cheers
Dawn M (an interested bystander)
