Post by: WYNN on Tuesday 24 March 09 10:40 GMT (UK)
This is my Grandmother. I am trying to find out who her mother was and possible father. She was illegitimate. She was born Wingate Co Durham. Her mother was poss. Elizabeth or Margaret Harrison. Story has it her mother emmigrated to USA and married a German Jew . I am completely stuck and have been trying to uncover this info for years now. Just found this site and you guys seem to be full of info. Hope you can help?

You just pipped me to the post there, Pam!

If you get her birth cert then all should be revelaed! Well, if she was illegitimate then possible that fathers name will not be given of course.

Certs can be ordered inline at www.gro.gov.uk, remember to give the ref number that Pam has found for you.

Have you looked for her on 1881 census which is free to search?

Thanks guys. I now have her birth cert. Mother is Margaret but no father named. Does anyone know what this means. Where it states SIGNATURE,DESCRIPTION AND RESIDENCE OF INFORMANT. It says M.A.Miles Present at Birth Wingate. Would this be a doctor?

How would I find out who Margaret married in America?

Thanks.....Wynn

No father named indicates that the baby was illegitimate.

The informant was just that  - the person registering the birth. Unlikely to be a doctor, a doctor would not take on that task. More likely a relation or maybe a friend.
Unusual to see, more often than not it is the mother that registers the birth.

What does the cert say about the mother - is it simply Margaret Harrison? Does it give address? and what is the date?

Do you know when Margaret went to America? was it before 1881, that would explain why we cant get her on 1881 census.

Yes Lorna this is correct.

What happened to Margaret? Family gossip says she went to America. I found her on a passenger list but can't / don't know where to look re a marriage......think it was to a German Jew.
