Hi Nabla,
How exotic is the name of your file? Bear in mind that it must be something that noone has ever used on RC. If it's something like GrandfatherSmith, try renaming it to Nabla2GrandfatherSmith :)

i have posted this here because you are practising and may have found a SIMPLE answer
-
An Error Has Occurred!
Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow.
You may want to post a question on this issue on the Technical Help section of RootsChat.

i have posted and had good replies but getting the info in my head is the problem

Hi Harry, (and others),
there is an example for the img-tags here:
http://www.rootschat.com/help/posting.php#bbc_tags
Basically, they are usable for linking to internet images.
For adding images from the computer, they need to be "attached"

For those of you wanting to use animated gifs as avatars, first thing you need to know is size matters, the biggest that I have been able to put into place is 76 x 76 pixels 26765 bytes, I have tried using the original size but it stops the animation so I use this on-line resizer,

The restriction is to prevent people who haven't read the Rootschat rules properly and don't realise they mustn't post copyright material to the website - which is more likely to happen on look-up boards. It isn't an infallible barrier but we feel it helps those who might accidentally transgress.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
-
But surely if they find they can't post in that particular forum they'll just upload to somewhere like Photobucket and link to there as I did.
If you really want to stop people posting copyright material you'll have to prevent them linking to images...
-
As I say, the solution isn't infallible. It is meant as an elegant reminder which gives people pause for thought rather than an obstacle to be surmounted by the stubbornly persistent!
;D
-
OK - I don't want to start an argument here but it's hardly an "elegant reminder" - it looks much more like broken software when encountered for the first time. If it was "elegant" it wouldn't say "Attach a photograph or image..."

Hello Bob,
I managed to attach it on the practice page, but when I tried over and over again on my posting, I just kept getting an error message, so I gave up.
It was something along the lines of:
There is already an attachment with the same filename as the one you tried to upload. Please rename the file and try again. ...
I renamed it, but I still got the same message.
:'(
Linda
-
Did you rename it on your computer ??
Try adding some numbers to then name, RootsChat only allows each file name to be used once.

"Bad Request. Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand"
Is this because I'm using a MAC?
Are there different instructions for MAC's?
Or isn't it possible?
Thanks
Lee
-
It shouldn't be any different for a MAC.
Are you sure you are trying to attach a valid file and that the allowed size size hasn't been exceeded ??
(Sometimes the error messages don't "fit" the problem)
Allowed file types: txt, rtf, jpg, jpeg, gif, tif, pdf, mpg, png, ged
Maximum attachment size allowed: 500 KB
Bob
-
Hi Bob
Well it was in tif but I've rescanned to jpeg & is estimated as 11 MB
Just didn't notice!
It's not a large photo but my scanner wanted to do it in a 200 resolution, but I changed it to 300, as requested! As I would just like crease marks removed would 200 be good enough?
If not, would cropping it help?
Thanks
Lee
-
Depends what you want to post it for. In general we don't allow certificates, census images or other official documents to be posted in full, but it's OK to post a section of it, for help with deciphering bits of it, so cropping would help there.
Some tips here for cropping ...

But how do I display it inline, below this line
but above this one?
OK, if I let the attachment display, and then cut and paste the URL as an IMG that works.
So how do I suppress the attachment from displaying at the bottom
Ahah - unattach doesn't delete the image, so the link still works, but DOES stop it being displayed.
Bingo - perfect result.
But is it REALLY meant to be this tricky?

Why do I get this error when trying to post a topic with an attached image file:
An Error Has Occurred!
Sorry! There is already an attachment with the same filename as the one you tried to upload. Please rename the file and try again.
This error is confusing, as the distinction between posting and uploading is not clear. Renaming the file doesn't help either. It's a .jpg file 34k in size. Is the error message trying to imply that attachments have to be named uniquely from all other attachments ever posted?
-
Correct Dale, if you upload a photograph called "janebrown.jpeg" and there is another photograph already uploaded by another member called Janebrown.jpeg you will get the error message. Don't preview your posting as this also can cause a problem as RootsChat thinks it is two images, if you make a mistake this can be edited.
Regards
Sarah :)
-
OK, thank you. The server could be made to handle this, for example, by appending a time stamp, username, and index number to each attachment as it comes in. At the very least, I suggest that the error message be changed to tell users to name their attachments this way. As attachment files build up on the server, users are going to have a harder and harder time guessing at unique filenames without being able to see the existing ones.
Dale
-
Rewriting the filename of every attempted file upload also has it's own overhead on the server, so that's why we don't do that.
The error message does say "Please rename the file and try again." I suppose it could be main clearer, though.

Hi Sarah
I was replying to an item on The Common Room. It allowed me to select an attachment but when I clicked on "Post" nothing happened so I thought there might be something wrong with the attachment. Are attachments not allowed in The Common Room?
Jim
-
yes Jim,
you will need to re-name the image file that you have already posted because each image has to have a unique filename I have just removed the image to make it easier for you ;)
Try again
-
Thanks for confirming that Sarah. I won't in fact try again as that particular thread has now finished and it would only confuse people. It must have just been a hiccough in the system. As long as I know for the future that attachments can be used on The Common Room, which seemed to be the most appropriate board for my general family history query. Thanks again for your help.

I'm wanting to include a .png file in the body of a post (say, at position X above) & even though I go through the process of choosing the file, I can't tell where it will appear in the actual post as Preview is not working. Does this sound correct??
And what happens here if I use the menu icon Insert Image ?
So I Posted. And discover the attachment sits at the end of the post (unsurprisingly, I guess, as an attachment).
And still cannot see how to insert an image at (http://) above - I see the cursor blinking between the two sets of [] but how to get an image imbedded at the cursor's position??
Sorry, but I cannot see from the FAQ/various instructions how to include a graphic file from my own collection (ie not directly from the Net) in the body of a text.
Would be grateful for assistance.

Let's see how this works - or doesn't.
-
Hello Garden genie,
That worked ;D please remember though that when you come to post that image you will need to rename the filename slightly as it will not allow two filenames to have the same name ;)

Hello, would appreciate if someone could let me know if I've attached a photo in the correct manner. I intend posting it plus my query on the correct page once I know if it's okay. Thanks very much.
-
Hello Pfig,
Yes the image is attached fine. You have attached as a pdf, if you change the file type to jpg it should display on the screen without having to download it which makes it easier to view. :)
-
Thank you so much. Is this better?
-
Yes, that's great!
On some of the totally off topic boards there is a limit to the size of photo, 150kB I think and generally 600 wide is standard, though you could go up to around 700 I think so that you don't have to scroll to see the whole photo. :)
-
Thanks again. I could see that it was okay and was so excited that I just went ahead and posted my query on the handwriting deciphering board. Fingers crossed someone can read what's on the back of it :)

I'm assuming you're having trouble because the file size is too large? I haven't used them, but there are various apps you can download to compress the file size of your photos, eg "Photo Compressor and Resizer" (Android) and "Image Size" (iphone).
-
I've managed to work it out now, thank you 😊

Why is it that here on this thread when I click on the button below for "Attachments and other options" I get the three options about: Notify me of replies, Return to this Topic and Don't use smilies and then below is the box for attaching files like images.
But earlier today when I was on the Durham Look up Requests boardand wanted to add a picture from my Desktop - the box to add images was not there?
-
You can't add attachments to any "*** Lookup Requests" board. ;)
-
Thank KG - that bit of info explains what has been a mystery to me for years.
