I am still trying to locate a marriage for my Great great grandparents prior to embarking for India from Gravesend(Jan 1841)
with the Cheshire regiment - based in Dublin until Dec 1840
So I would expect a marriage in 1840 hopefully in Dublin. Their first child was born in India in 1841
William Roe b. 1816
Catherine Woods b. 1821
I have checked for a UK marriage with no result.
I know Ireland is not easy but any help would be most appreciated.

unfortunately the marriage you are searching for is before Civil registration started here (1845 for non-catholic marriages, 1864 for all) - so you'll need to to try parish records.
The first thing you'll need to know is the religion, and then a possible location of the marriage.
Other than searching through numerous parish microfilms for Dublin City and County, the only other option I can think of is an online search at the Irish Family History Foundation Website at www.irish-roots.ie (paysite - with register transcripts), but their database does not contain much of Dublin City at the moment..

Thanks for the advice. Have been having a look at the Irish family history site - does look expensive at first
glance - looks like about $10 for each look! Makes Findmypast look like a bargain!

i had a look at family history site for you . you have no one even close to those dates for births or marriage . this site is only good for north and south side dublin they have no data for city center where bulk of dublin population lived . had a look at dublinheritage.ie home page no look there either .
try figure out where william lived in dublin maybe his military records give a clue , and order parish records through your local LDS heritage center , reckon its your best bet .
good luck

Obbie - Many thanks for trying for me. I've no idea where he live unfortunately. I do know his regiment and when he enlisted in the Cheshire regiment and I have his army testimonials. About his service records - how easy is it to get them. Do I go through
the GRO' I am still trying to learn about all this - its all a bit of a mystery

hi j s i live in ireland , you wont get any info here about british military , you need to search british national archives , you can do some of this on line , but you really need to visit , its kew in london . i researched my gr gr grandfather who was in artillery ,
i found it much cheaper to get someone to do it for me .
i used www.richardmoles.com , he was excellent and trust worthy charged me 40 euros
he got me most of the records took him about a month .
if he gets your records it should say where your guy lived it might even mention his wife
best of luck , happy hunting .

Thanks OBBIE. That looks promising and certainly cheaper than visiting - I am in Brisbane
Australia! I'll investigate.
And again thanks for your trouble. appreciated. John

Thank you so much for your trouble. These messages don't seem to carry a date, so don't know how old your
message is - we've been overseas for 6 weeks.
This marriage certainly looks likely. The date of the marriage is the exact same date as their sailing from Dublin
for Liverpool with his Cheshire Regiment. When he enlisted at Birr, Kings country in 1833 he gave his
occupation then as shoemaker. But I guess he could have changed to carpentery in that 7 years.
Can you tell me what is ....of N/R ?
On 8th. Jan 1841 William and Catherine embarked for India from Gravesend. Their first child Letitia is shown to be born
in Poona in 1841. There were 7 children in all born in India.
