Does any body have actual Cemetery burial records for Cottingham (just north of Hull). I am looking for Stephenson. My William Stephenson married a Mary Ann Scott at Cottingham in 1838. They are found in the 1841 census at Cottingham ... but had moved to Stoneferry in Sutton (I believe this is just E of Cottingham) in 1851. All their Children were baptised at Cottingham ... Wm Edwin in 1839 / Elizth in 1841 / Robt 1845 / Mary-Ellen 1847 and Alfred in 1849.
I am told that William Stephenson and wife Mary (nee Scott) lost 2 children .. a girl possibly named Alice, and a boy named Henry Scott Stephenson ( I have this Henry as baptised Jan 11. 1843 ... buried at Cottingham 31st January 1844 .. 1 year old .. Fathers occ. joiner and wheelwright.) In 1841 they were at Thwaite in Cottingham... this family came to Ontario Canada in 1854.
I am just interested to find what cemetery they are buried in ( Alice & Henry) .. and if there might be a stone. I think I already likely know about the stone part ... 'hay' that cost money .. right?!

Thankyou for that ... plot 415 .. Catherine, wife of William. I have a Stephenson family history from 1917, that tells me this Catherine was a Archbutt and married William Stephenson (a Methodist preacher) .. and after 5 children came to Canada in about 1843. during the cholera of 1849, she died ... Catherine's sister Sarah Archbutt left Cottingham .. and went to Canada, where she also married William .. her sisters former husband ... but Sarah died a few weeks after the wedding (from heavy cold and ship fevor)
But alas .. I do not think I am any relation to this Stephenson family that Catherine married into. I just happen to have this old family history (done in 1917 - 1918)
-
Steve ... what does the MI for Cottingham show for the surname SCOTT. My Mary Stephenson .. who came to Canada in 1854 was a Scott from Cottingham. Her father was a Wiilam Scott who I am told died in 1852 .. and the mother was Mary Twidle.
The boat record of my Stephensons (Hull to New York) docked Nov 12 1854 ... show Mary Stephenson (record spelled it Stevenson) and 5 children .. plus 3 Scotts .. Mary Scott age 57 / Thomas Scott age 38 and Ann Scott age 30 (plus an Elizabeth Withernwick .. who I believe was also a Scott)
I believe the Mary Scott(57) is maybe William Scotts wife (nee Twiddle) and the Thomas(38) may have left a wife .. and never sent for her (Mary Scott .. nee Clark.. possibly buried with children Thomas and Sarah)
On the boat record Thomas Scott is down as a Gardener

Hi Ken, We spoke some time age ref The Stephenson familes, but figured out there was no link, anyway, thought you might like to read this from todays Hull Daily Mail...
http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk/news/Help-catch-graveyard-vandals/article-874336-detail/article.html
Hull Daily Mail- 6th April 2009
POLICE are stepping up patrols in Sutton after vandals damaged 32 headstones in a church graveyard.
The headstones have been pushed over at St James' Church in what officers describe as an act of "mindless" vandalism.
The culprits attacked some of the stones on Thursday before returning on Friday to cause yet more damage.
The Mail understands that families whose deceased relatives' graves have been affected have not yet discovered the devastating news.
Reverend Heather Nesbitt, vicar of St James', Church Street, Sutton, said: "I think it is so sad. It appears whoever did it just went around and systematically pushed them over.
"We cannot necessarily get in touch with the families so it is a case of waiting for them to visit.
"Then they will come to my door in such a distressed state."
Rev Nesbitt said she was preparing for visits from people who would be understandably upset.
She said: "Relatives are going to be very distressed to find the grave they have been attending, maybe over the years, has been desecrated as far as they're concerned.
"It is sacred to the memory of the people who are there and it is so sad."
PC Rich Watson, beat manager of the East Policing Team, based at Bransholme Police Station, said his main priority was finding who caused the damage.
He said: "There are families who have relatives and friends deceased in the graveyard and they expect it to be a place they can rest in peace.
"They expect to be able to pay their respects without having to put up with such mindless damage."
PC Watson said his team would be stepping up patrols of the area in a bid to find who caused the damage.
Anyone with information about the damage is being asked to call Humberside Police on 0845 6060222 .
Lets hope they catch the culprits!
-
That is sad. We went through .. the same thing in my small town here in Ontario ( about 20,000 pop)... just last year 70 stones were pushed over ... it was VERY VERY sad to see. It happened in the night on a weekend ... just some guys going home from a party .. I THINK. In our case they were caught ... and the town (which owns the cemetery) picked up the tab, to fix all of this. The sadest part is really old stones that break apart when kicked over ... but if I could leave a good note ... my town did a very good job of fixing all this.

Be a couple of weeks before I get to have a look at the MI again
Have you any more details on the Scotts
I had a look at various years census, I assume you have seen these

When did Thomas senior die in Canada
Do we assume Mary was in touch with her husband in Canada, her status changes from married to widow between 1861 and 1871
-
No I had not looked the 1851 ... through to 1901 census up, for Thomas's family. But I have been talking with other Scott conections in the Hull area ... that told me about Thomas's wife showing as married in 1861 .. and widow in 1871. I only know that my Mary Stephenson (she was born at Cottingham in 1819 .. to parents William Scott and Mary Twidle) came to Canada in 1854 ... and as I have the boat record (Ancestry, has New York Port records 1820 - 1957) .. and it shows all 27 passengers .. I know from this, that there was a Thomas Scott age 38 .. trade given as Gardener ... and a Mary Scott age 57 and an Ann Scott age 30 on the same boat. They all settled around Hamilton in Wentworth County Ontario ... and I believe Ann Scott married an Edward Nicholls in the Hamilton area 1856 or so. The first Ontario census to find them in is 1861 ... at which time my Stephensons ... plus Elizth and Wm Withernwick were in Barton Township, Wentworth County (Hamilton area) ... but the Nicholls's had already moved and were found in Caradoc Township, Middlesex County (near the town of Strathroy) as follows ... Caradoc T.S 1861 .....
E Nichols carpenter born Eng age 28
A Nichols born: Eng age 28
T Nichols born: Canada age: 4
C E Nichols " Canada born in 1860
T Scott laborer born England age 40
W Stevenson carpenter born: England age 22
The census went on to state that of this household of 6 people ... 3 were married. As you can see full first names were not given ... but I believe this is Edward and wife Ann and their sons Thomas and Charlie E plus Thomas Scott and Wm Stephenson (Mary Stephenson's 1st born) . Now as I believe Wm Stephenson (or Stevenson .. as stated in the census) was still single at this time ... that would mean that Edward & Ann Nicholls plus T Scott are the married ones.
I have tried ... but have found no death for this T{homas} Scott. Ontario death reports only go back to 1869 .. and the local newpaper is on micro film ... starting in 1870 onward. Plus early burial records for the cemetery only go back to about 1874 or so.
And as for the Mary Scott ... I have her name on the boat record, and that is it ... if she made it to Hamilton here in Ontario ... I just do not know.
Mary Stephenson died at Strathroy Ont in 1897 ... and the local newspaper stated that she was from a family of 16 ... with 2 borother still living ... Edward at Hull and Richard at Cottingham
-
Ken
Do you know when Mary died
When I looked at the MI books at the Treasure House (East Riding Archives)
There was only one book in the section for Cottingham (St Marys)
There is another cemetery down Eppleworth Road, I think this is a municipal cemetery (all dominations are buried here)
Looking on the East Yorkshire Family History Society's list of publications they have two booklets for this cemetery. Possibly someone was already looking at these or else they could have been misfiled
I should be going in the next couple of weeks
-
Hi
I'm a bit confused about who you are looking for but I have the MI's for Cottingham, the Church and the cemetery, so can do you a look up

I guess I am looking for two things ... as far as the Cottingham burial records are concerned. Number one ... any record of a Stephenson .. buried at Cottingham, any time period. And the same for the surname of Scott. Now that might be too much work ... so what if I said up to the year 1900.
A short version of my family history ... takes me back to Doncaster ... a William Stephenson (coachmaker) married an Alice Carter in Cantley parish W Yorks in 1811 ... having sons Henry born Doncaster 1812 and William Jr 1814. Now if I am reading the paish records correctly ... then the parents Wm and Alice .. died real young (Wm in 1820 & Alice in 1819) ... their son Wm Jr married Mary Scott at Cottingham E Yorks in 1838 ... going on to have 6 children (maybe 7) all baptised at Cottingham ... parish records show that one son 'Henry Scott Stephenson was buried at Cottingham Jan 11 1843. At this point (in 1854) they came to the Hamilton area in Ontario, Canada.
William died at 52 (working for 'The Great Western Railway') here in Ont in 1866 ... his wife Mary died at Strathroy in Ont in 1897 ... with the newspaper stating that she was from a family of 16 ... and two brothers were yet living .. Edward Scott a jeweller of Hull Eng and Richard at Cottingham. I also knw that Mary's parents were a William Scott and Mary Twidle (formerly of Brantingham) farmers in Cottingham.
Here is what I am trying to piece together ... I know that Stephenson (in the 1800's) is a lot more common around Hull, than back at Doncaster. So I keep wondering if my William was possibly raised by Stephenson relations ... back at Cottingham (or at least Hull area), when his parents died. His brother Henry got a farm at Branton, in Cantley parish ... that was owned by his Uncle Wm Carter... but why Wm was either raised ... or moved back to Cottingham ... that I am not sure on.
So by finding all the Stephenson ... and Scott burials at Cottingham ... I just thought, something might give me a clue here ... if you understand what I am saying :-\

Hi Ken
Looking through the MI's, there are 56 entries for Stephenson and 42 for Scott. :o and maybe some more that would be included if they had a headstone.
Using your info, then these seem like the most obvious

In loving memory of Mary Scott who died 6/3/1911 aged 92,
also Sarah daughter of the above who died 25/8/1913 aged 68,

.......................................................
In loving memory of Rhoda, daughter of Richard & Eliza Scott of COttingham who died 26/2/1898 aged 29,
also Eliza Ann, wife of Richard Scott who died 7/1/1900 aged 66
also the above Richard who died 28/8/1903 aged 78
BR

Hello
I have read that you have some Stephenson family history, William and Catherine nee Archbutt
I am related to this branch of the family, William's brother John is my 3x great grandfather, would you be able to tell me more??
Another of William's brothers was also a Methodist preacher, he remained in Cottingham and married into the Zealand family
-
Well ... to give you a short version of MY family history ......... my ggg was a William Stephenson born 1814 at Doncaster S Yorks ... but he married a Mary Scott at Cottingham in 1838 ... going on to have at least 6 children baptised at Cottingham ... and lived in the area. This family came to Canada in 1854 ... but if my William was any relation to Cottingham area Stephensons ... I still do not know this.
Back some 25 years ago, I teamed up with another relation here in Ontario, and we became the family genealogists ... gathering up death reports for ancestors ... searching census records ... sitting in front of mico-film reading machines ... and all that family tree searching stuff :).
Jean (the lady who was helping me) lives close to Toronto, here in Ont., and she used the Mormon Library research room ... plus Toronto Archives, along with talking to older relations here in Ont ... and some where in this search, she came across the Cottingham, Stephenson family history that was done in 1916 - 17, and she sent me a photo copy of it. But I can not remember where she got it now.
As I say, what I have is a photo copy of the booklet (Stephenson Brochure) ... and I am going to guess that it must have been in a Toronto Library, here in Ontario. It is quite a few pages long, and looks to be fairly professsionally done, with black and white photographs printed in it and all.
I will have to phone Jean and ask her where she got it ... she is in her early 80's now ... and having some health problems.
PS ... go to the top of this page ... and it will read Welcome back Bunny1129 you have 1 message (click on here) the private message is from me

bunny: the site here tries to protect everybody.... that is why they take E-mails posted here off. Because anybody can read this ... you could end up receiving mail that you do not want ... Haaay, someone has to look after us :P
This (photo-copied) Stephenson history, that I have is titled 'The Stephenson Bochure - 1917 ~1918 - STEPHENSONS of East Yorkshire, &c - STEPHENSONS of Canada and New Zealand - ROWNTREES of York &c - PETTYS of Leeds, London and Reading - MAINPRIZE of Bridlington, Famborough &c"
It is 67 pages long ... and starts off with a John Stephenson of Carnaby, Yorks ... said to be burried in the churchyard at Boynton Apr 7, 1812 ... in his 69th year. A shepherd for nearly 50 years to Sir William Strickland. Then goes to his oldest son also John Stephenson .. born Nov 24 1774, died 1839 ... father of Joseph, William, Edmund and Benjamin (who with the exception of the last mentioned emigrated to Canada)
Benjamin .. fourth son of John Stephenson ( farmer at Cottingham) born at Cottingham Aug 7th 1818 married a Hannah Zealand at Cottingham on Dec 25 1841 ........ their children Mary born 1842 / John born 1844 / Fanny 1846 / Annie 1855 (died an infant)
As I say this is quite a detailed history ... and it also jumps back to a history of 'The Quaker Stephensons'(1600's) of Carnab, Bridlington Quay, Stockton and Manchester...of which the Rowntrees fit into, and the Martyred Marmaduke Stephenson.
-
How fascinating!!
I know from certs etc that the whole family were Methodists, even into the late 19th century
The Stephensons nearly had occupations connected to the sea, several were merchant seamen, my great grandfather Alexander was killed in action in 1917 on board a Q-ship the Vala, it was torpedoed by a u-boat.
I have only just found out in the past couple of weeks another Stephenson relative, which has proved exciting, he too was a marine fireman, the family moved to Coventry, where they live today
-
Of the William Stephenson (born Cottingham March 21 1808 .. died 1883) who married Catherine Archbutt ... their children were .... Mary born 1831 (she married James Dryden Nov 4 1856 and she died 1862) / Fanny (born 1833 .. did not marry) / Hannah (born Sept 12 1836, went to Canada, married J.D. Clerke, 1859 ... died Oct 13 1891 / John Archbutt (born 1837, married Mary Wilson Jackson, 1870, died Nov 14 1900 / Dr Samuel (born June 6 1844, married Sara O'Brien, 1884 .. died Oct 2 1902 / Sophia (born March 30th 1846 .. married Oliver R Lyon Dec 27 1870 .............. and it goes on from there
-
I have a copy of William's death notice from the paper, which I can post, I have some photos of Wm, Edmund Joseph (vet) and Benjamin, as well as their mother
Will get digging on those names.......................!!!
Thanks Shelly

In this 67 page history ... inside what looks like the back cover (remembering, that what I have is a photocopy of the work ... not the actual book its self) there appears to have been an old obit., cut out of a newspaper and glued in, which reads ......
"Sarah Cook Stephenson.
Miss Sarah Cook Stephenson, third
daughter of the late Joseph Stephen-
son and the late Mary Wilson Stephen-
son of Cobourg, Ont., died in Toronto
yesturday in her 82nd year, after a long
illness. The late Miss Stephenson was
born in Richmond Hill, and began
teaching school in Aurora, Ont., when
18 years old, continuing active in the
profession until, she was 70 years of
age. For 23 years she was on the staff
of DeMills Collage, Oshawa and St.
Catharines and also taught for three
years in mission schools. She was a
life long Methodist and a member of
(Glebe)? Road United Church. There
survive two brothers, Dr A.R. Stephen-
son of Ogdensburg, New York, and
Edmund F Stephenson, of Victoria
B.C., and one sister, Mrs David Stouf-
fer, of (162)? Albertus Avenue, Toronto, at
whose home, service will be held Sun-
day evening at 8:30 o'clock. Interment
will be in Cobourg on Monday."
Now ... I asume this obit, was glued in here because she was of this same family line. I do not know what year the news item is from ... or what paper it was cut out of.

William etc had a sister called Elizabeth, she went on to marry a Thomas Cook, Thomas was a printer, they moved to Leeds
they had John Stephenson Cook he married Caroline Carter

Hi Ken S,
I believe I am also descended from the Stephenson's of Cottingham - Benjamin & Hannah are my great, great grandparents (through John) and my father had the "Zealand" reference in his name.
I would love to be able to get a copy of the brochure you mentioned - I am unable to find much reference to anything here in Australia. I know my grandmother had a "book" when I was a child but she died and no one can seem to tell me where that went - which is a real shame.
Thanks Cheryl.

CherLai ... if you would send me a pm (personal message) giving me your reg mail. Would try and send you a copy

Hi Ken S
Thanks so much - have sent you a PM with details.
Many thanks once again.

My Mary Stephenson (born 1819 at Cottingham) died at Strathroy Ontario Canada in 1897. Here in Ontario 1880's to 1930's or so, if a person had lived in the same area for quite a while ... quite often there was a fairly long death report, put in local papers for them. In the UK ... I think a person had to be very important to get such a long obit. Possibly you have found Australia to also give long obits in the early days?

Hello,
I stumbled across this post while trying to trace roots for my Great-Great Grandfather John Archbutt Stephenson and his wife Mary Wilson Jackson. I do have a fair bit of info on Mary's maternal side but not much other than stories on John. Can you help me out? I also saw that "Bunny" lists herself as a relation. I'd love to hear from you as well!
John Archbutt Stephenson - Edward John Stephenson - Albert William Stephenson - my father and then me. I'm in Ontario as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Ken,
I am descended from Benjamin Stephenson and hannah stephenson through their son john and his son Wilfred. Wilfred is my great grandfather. I am wondering if you would know where I may be able to obtain a copy of the brochure you have referred to in these posts as I am in Australia and cannot find anything listed including over the internet. It may help with some of the questions on the earlier ancestors.
kind regards,
Vicki

Hi Ken,
I did thank you very much. After going through it though, I am a bit confused about John from Carnabys relationship with the 'first' ancestors in the book - starting at Ralph. I am interested in finding out who were Johns parents, but as yet I can't find this and there is no one who could have been his direct line coming from Ralph. So still searching.....
kind regards,
Vicki

Hi KenS,
I am Dr. Everton Morris' (Ila Maude Stephenson's son) granddaughter. I believe he is your cousin or your 2nd cousin. I used a lot of your research about 20 years ago when I was a teenager, and am now helping my son create a family tree for his grade 6 class. He is only doing straight back, so no siblings of anyone. I am wondering if you have found anything further back than what your signature says (William/Alice Carter and William/Mary Twidle)? Do you have birth/death dates for any of those 4?
On the Mary Emiline Petit side, do you have anyone above Levi Petit/Hester Vrooman and his parents Henry Petit/Maria Stockwell (birth/death dates for these 2 or place of birth for any of them?)
Thank you for all of the information you have researched on the family :)

..... just off the top of my head: Alfred Stephenson married twice and had .. Edward/William/George/Jessie ..... John/Jim/Lucy/Walter/Mary/Etta/Fred/Archie/Maude/Mable ... plus about 3 that died as kids .. one from that first marriage and 2 from the second. John (oldest of the second marriage) was my great grandfather.

On the Stephenson side ... the William that came to Canada (1854) .. left one brother .. Henry (who lived at Branton in Cantley Parish .. W Yorkshire). Both Henry and his parents Wm Stephenson and Alice Carter are buried in St Wifrid's Church grave yard (Cantley .. just S.E of Doncaster Yorks) .. And I believe the next generation back, is another William Stephenson a coachmaker of Doncaster, who died in 1806.
