Does anyone have any tips where I could find any street maps of the Toxteth area for 1840/1850. Preferably online but where to purchase them from if not available on line.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave
What part of Toxteth Park are you interested in? Alan Godfrey Maps have just published the St James' Mount large scale plan from the mid 19th Century, so most of TP above Upper Parliament Street (but only about 15% of the total) is now covered. There are also a few bits below Upper Parliament Street. Most of Toxteth Park would have been undeveloped in 1840-50.
If you google 'old ordnance survey maps' you should find links to a few resellers of OS plans of the period. These can cost £30-40 for good quality copies. Godfrey's use plans from the Scottish Library and the British Library should have copies.
If you are looking for a big-ish street then six inches to one mile will do. But if you are looking for say a court you will need the 50 inch (1:1250) series.

Hi Dave,
not sure whether you will find what you want on here; but I thought I would pass it on to you, just in case.

It might come in useful at some stage - hope so.

Thanks to both Ken and Paulene for your help. I will have a look at those suggestions as soon as work and granchildren permit. Thanks once again. Hope you don't mind if I tap your knowledge again soon,
Dave.

That's fine, Dave :)

Just to add, the link below should take you to the old maps website showing the Toxteth Park area,

Just tried the link myself and it's taking me to the website but the site won't allow me to do a search, whatever I type in I get the message that my search is too big. Anyone else having this problem? It used to be an easy site to search ???
sorry Dave

Hi Jean,
Just tried the link, and it was working Ok.

Thanks Paulene
It must be a problem with my computer then :)

it did that the first time, when I clicked on the link - then I looked and realised I'd got the spelling wrong. When I changed it, it was ok - try it again, purplekat (like the name :))

I cannot see that you have said which part of Toxteth Park you are interested in. At a large scale - town plan level - that shows street names you could end up buying quite a few.
If you tell me a street I can tell you which map to buy.

Thanks purplekat and paulene. I will try that link and see what comes up.
Ken,
This request was in connection with an earlier post regarding Jamaica Court, which I was told was a court in Jamaica st. near Park Place. An ancestor of mine,Alice Smith, is on the cencus of 1841 as living in No 3 Jamaica Court. I was brought up just a few hundred yards from that area and I was curious to see what the area was like in those days. I have a number of local history books with photographs of these old courts some of which I can still remember from my childhhod in the 50s and early 60s. I understand that these particular courts had gone by the 1871 cencus but I need to check that out.
Thanks once again for your help,
Regards,
Dave

:) Thanks very much for that Tony. It's exactly what I've been looking for. I am still a bit of a novice in this family history research but maybe I could return the favour one day.
Best wishes,
Dave
