Title: Going to Oz.
Post by: susanhamilton on Saturday 21 March 09 21:49 GMT (UK)
Trying  to  establish  when  a  Thomas  Crawford  born,  22-11-1803,  Greenock,  Scotland,  went  to  Oz.  His  first  Child,  Thomas,  was  born  on  the  11-2-1833,  Wiseman's  Ferry,  New  South  Wales.  Thomas  Snr.,  died  in  1875,  Wollombi,  and,  his  son,  Thomas,  died  1857,  Maitland.  No  exact  dates  for  either  death.

Any  help  would  be  appreciated  very  much.

Susan  Hamilton.

Hi Susan  :)

You can search NSW BDMs using the index here:  http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm
The certificates can then be ordered online via the site.

A death certificate for Thomas Snr should contain information about his parents, and how long he had been out in the colonies.  A marriage certificate (actually more likely a church register entry) might tell you which ship he arrived on - some of the ones from my family have this info.  It's hit and miss, though.

You can check the immigration indexes at http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/indexes-online; there are also indexes to the Bounty Immigration Scheme (1828 -->) on some subscription sites which people could look up for you.

Modified after finding the info below  :)

P.S.  I noticed from the NSW BDM site that Thomas married Mary WISEMAN, daughter of Solomon WISEMAN for whom Wiseman's Ferry is named.  There is plenty of information about Solomon online, and you may find out more about Thomas with a bit of searching!  :D

e.g.  http://www.hawkesbury.net.au/memorial/wisemans_ferry_convicts/wfcm3.html

P.P.S.  I've now found Thomas arrived in 1825 on the "Triton" as a free settler:

1828 Census of NSW (National Archives of UK copy).  Ref HO10/22

Thomas CRAWFORD [no age given]

Ship: Triton 2
Year: 1825
Religion:  Protestant
Employment:  Settler
Residence:  Ellelang
District:  Lus Kintyre?
Acres:  8000
Acres cleared:  60
Acres cultivated:  30
Horses:  12
Horned cattle:  381
Sheep:  832

You'll also find a couple of leads to other information if you look him up in the Colonial Secretary's Papers Index on the State Records website which I posted earlier.

Thanks  Pru  for  all  that  data.  Thomas  did  marry  Mary  Wiseman.  He  was  born  in  Greenock,  Renfrewshire,  Scotland.  and,  I  had  a  feeling  he  went  either  to  Oz  or  the  States.

Hi Susan,

This is an old post so not sure how relevant this is, but I have found this diary of Thomas Crawford that is being updated online by Glasgow University. I think you'll find this interesting...

What do you think the name of the island is?  it looks like TRIULDADD or something like that.  No such islands north of the cape, but judging by their speed and distance I reckon they were somethere west south/west of Gambia.  what do you think hampsons?  :)
