Hi,
I am looking for information about Britannia Heard (nee Hoadley) and her parents Job and Matilda Hoadley. They were involved with travelling fairgrounds up until the 1920s.
Thank you for your help.

by 1901 Matilda is a widow at 1901 RG13; Piece: 4010; Folio: 125; Page: 51
The family are in Barrow in Furness and there is a later daughter -Martha 8 yrs.
Matilda is a show traveller and Britannia is transcribed as Britmina on the indexes.
There are one or two references to the Hoadleys and Matilda if you google.

Hi Kate, I noticed this post whilst looking for something else and although you posted it quite a few months ago I thought I would respond.
My 2 x great grandmother was Sarah Hoadley who married Edward Camfield. Sarah's brother Job married Matilda Toogood and their daughter was Britannia. If you are related to Britannia it would make us both descended from James Hoadley and Sarah Furminger. I'm not sure if you've come across this website http://www.mechanicalorgans.co.uk/gavioli.html which shows pictures of Matilda's gallopers.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I am researching on behalf of my husband's family. My mother-in-law is the grand-daughter of Britannia.
I have seen the website you mentioned, as Samantha kindly posted me the details.
Many thanks.

My interest in the Hoadley family is through my research into fairground travellers in the north-east. If I have done my work correctly James Hoadley married Sarah Furminger and they had ten children:
James-born c1823 married Prescilla
William-born c1826 married Britannia Buckley
Horatio-born c1827 married Druscilla Coleman
Sarah-born c1830 married Edward Camfield
Walker-born c1932 married Matilda Coleman 16th January 1854
Alice-born c1834 married Ben Tapsell
Aquilla-born c1838 married Ellen Camfield
Samson-born c1844 married Matilda Parker
Elizabeth-born c1845-no further trace found
Job-born c1847 married Matilda Toogood
The main fairground links were Walker Hoadley's family, who were based around Gateshead/Newcastle upon Tyne and Job who seems to have travelled more at the other side of the country, around Westmoreland. The intention is to use the research in an article about North East Showmen in our (Fairground Society) magazine. If anyone can make any corrections or additions I would be interested to hear from you.

Hi
James Hoadley is my Husbands 3 x Gt Grandad. When comparing to our family tree , you have 3 additional children for James and Sarah, James,Horatio and Walker.Do you have any birth records for them as this is the first I knew of them.
We would be interested in any research you have as tracing the Hoadleys is quite challenging!
Many Thanks

Just a quick reply to begin with: Walker Hoadley's marriage certificate (16th January 1854 to Matilda Coleman) gives James Hoadley, Hawker, as his father. He gave his age as 21 at the time. Will look up the others as time permits.

Hi, I also have ancestors who owned fairground rides, I contacted the National Fairground Archives at Sheffield University, they were so helpful and found some amazing information and even a photograph! Obviously I had to pay for the photocopies, but it was so worth it. Here's the contact details..

Hi I am also looking for info on Britannia Heard nee Hoadley
I have recently been given some info from someone who got in contact with me on Genes Reunited who has a marriage certificate for Britannia and Henry Heard but doesn't have Britannia's parents as Job Hoadley and Matilda Toogood as originally thought.. Has Brits father as Horace Hoadley.
Just stumbled across this thread and wondered what info had been found out here?
look forward to hearing back from any of you.

Hi
I am Also looking for Britannia Hoadley. As she would be my husbands great great grandma. Britannias second marriage after the death of Henry Heard was to George Raife. I have George Raife and Britannia marriage certificate from 1918 and this also shows her father as Horace Hoadley.
In addition they are mentioned on this website for baptism with both Job and Britannia having Samson and Margaret Hoadley as parents. So this would suggest Job was her brother perhaps?!
http://romanygenes.com/more-baptisms/4522923985
with the previous post regarding the marriage cert for Britannia and Henry Heard also stating Horace Hoadley as her father not Job ...
Does anyone have any further information since these posts were first raised?
Thank You

The Britannia Hoadley who married Henry Heard was the daughter of Horace Hoadley and Amelia Turner, not the Britannia Hoadley connected to the fairground family. She was part of a large community of gypsies who settled around the docks and Plaistow area. Her father was a hawker. Britannia had three husbands, and lived her entire life in Essex, where she brought up 14 children. She died in 1972, and is fondly remembered by her grandchildren.
