Hope this helps - don't know how much you have found already :
1841 census at Broughton - township of Elslack
first entry : unreadable abode name - something like ....sons Mill or Gill
David SMITH 60 Farmer y
Elizabeth SMITH 60 y
Mary SMITH 30 y
next abode = Elslack (?) Hall - John Edmonson & family (farmer)
next abode - ..............unreadable but doesn't look like cockers hill
Francis SMITH 25 Farmer y
Anne SMITH 25 y
Robert SMITH 2 y
David SMITH 10 months y
there are a couple more pages then a number of 'cottages'
Cottage -
John SMITH 35 Ag. Labourer y
Hannah SMITH 30 y
Elizabeth " 12 y
Sarah " 11 y
Martha " 10 y
Joseph " 8 y
Francis " 3 y
John " 1 y
From IGI - Francis SMITH born Norton 26 Nov 1812 bpt. 4 Dec 1812
parents David Smith & Elizabeth
siblings :
John SMITH born 21 Oct 1810 Norton
bapt. 23 Oct 1810
Mary SMITH bpt 24 April 1808 at Birdsall
David SMITH bpt 1806 "
David SMITH bapt. Broughton in Skipton 17 July 1777 (C106102)
parents - Robert Smith & Hannah
Robert SMITH married Hannah HARRISON - Broughton in Skipton 1776
I think it is likely that Robert Smith & Hannah had a farm in Elslack - son David moved away to find work & had children in Birdsall - moved back as his father aged
Francis possibly took over his fathers farm.
The best way to find Ann's maiden name would be from her son's birth certificates
-
Here is David Smith's birth certificate details - you can order online now - for £7 if you give the ref.
SMITH DAVID Sept. Qu. 1840 SKIPTON 23 567
cheers

Thanks for that, Have the family pretty much sorted from 1851 but needed more clues to their Ancestors.
May the force be with you.

Ids the 1861 Census out yet? I could really do with it!
-
1836 online have started putting the 1861 census on their website - but not Yorkshire yet.....
I don't have access to it, but you may get help if you ask for a look-up on here !
Elslack is a pretty small place ! There is nothing on the freecen website either ! sorry.
There is a marriage on the IGI for a Francis Smith & Anne Robinson at Kilham in Yorkshire - 27 July 1833 - a bit out of the way - but when you get your certificate you should be able to trace the proper marriage !

Hi Rowdy
There's a marriage on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com for Francis Smith at Skipton in the Sept 1/4 of 1837
Anne Tattersall is the girl you're looking for :)

Just a few more bits I found----
I have the '61 census and note that Francis and Anne had children with the names Thomas & Margaret
--IGI shows the 26 March 1815 Christening of an Anne Tattersall at Gargrave -- parents Thomas & Margaret
and-- Gargrave contains Coniston and is near Skipton
Also found was a sister Susannah 23 May 1813
and --- 2 other Tattersall families had children at around the same time in Gargrave -- Lawrence & Jane + James & Ellen
That all looks quite promising!!!!! --- Couldn't find the parents on the unreadable 1841 census --nor in 1851
A Thomas Tattersall married Margret Aldersley on 17 Dec 1812 at Carlton In Craven.

I think that Birdsall is probably BURNSALL which lies on the R Wharfe. The church there is very old. Norton is possibly Norton Tower, or the area near it. It is an ancient ruin lying on the fell side above the road from Skipton to Rylstone, and not very far from Burnsall.
Cheers

Thanks for trying but Birdsall is actually a village near Norton and Grindalyth which is near Malton north Yorkshire.
I found a marriage at Grindalyth and Children born Norton and Birdsall on the IGI.
Shame though as I love Burnsall and have avery nice water colour hanging on my wall of the river pub church and bridge. If I remeber rightly the pub is called the Red lion!

I know this topic was some years ago but I am also trying to find more information on Francis Smith and his daughter Elizabeth who married my great grandfather Levi Lee . Did you get any further with this research that you would like to share with me?
Many Thanks
