I found this article in the Whitby Gazette earlier today http://www.whitbygazette.co.uk/news/Whitby-Archive-centre-is-shut.5089992.jp
It seems that the Whitby Archives Centre haven't been able to afford to pay their rent and have been closed down.
I do hope that this situation can be resolved as the Archives Centres is a mine of information about past life in Whitby and they have some wonderful exhibits.

Thanks for letting us know about that. To judge from reactions of the locals in the Whitby Gazette there seems to be some concern about the closure so perhaps another local group might help out.
To be honest when I visited the archive I did feel they needed to sharpen up their act a bit but they tried to help and certainly have some interesting exhibits.

It's always sad when something like this happens. We've been involved in supporting a similar project in another town and usually popped into the Whitby centre when we went there for the day.
The problem, though, is often that not enough people are sufficiently interested to keep projects like this going. People's circumstances change so sometimes those who have voluntarily given of their time for many years are no longer able to do so. When that occurs there is a need for others to take their place.
It is also necessary to attract people who are "street wise" when it comes to attracting funding.

Does anyone know if the centre has re-opened or if it's holdings have been transferred to the Whitby Lit and Phil?
