Thomas Makin was born in Ireland about 1792. He came ove to England and married Margaret from Houghton or Hoghton, can't find which one yet. According to the 1861 Census Ennumerator he was born in Mullokin Crayglas. I realise that this has been written phonetically. It has been suggested that it could be Monaghan. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would be grateful for any help and this is my first post so I hope it's ok.

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome and helping me lay it out better. I was always told that old Tom came from Ireland when I was a child before it was possible to search the Census records. I would just love to find out more.
:)

Hi
One problem is determining exactly where he came from - the other is finding Irish records for that period.
Trying to find info for the 1790's is difficult as many Irish records were destroyed
I have had to give up on my own FH as my great grandfather was b 1830/31 in Belfast and there are no records

Hello.
I know it's 5-1/2 years gone, but I may be able to fill in a bit of a blank spot.
My mother was Frances Makin, b.1921, Harpurhey, of Thomas Joseph Makin and Agnes Kean Makin.
She told the tale of one of her ancestors having been born & raised in Ireland, and having to flee for his life. He ended up in England. Perhaps Manchester was far enough from the coast for him to feel safe there. Perhaps not. That may be why in one census he said he was born in Ireland and another he and all his kin were born in England.
He had to leave Ireland because one day while he was hunting for food, two of the King's men came on him and accused him of poaching the King's game. As they prepared to hang him, he killed them both and ran away.
It makes sense to me that one would run like hell if one had just killed two police officers. I don't think waiting around for them to catch me makes any sense. There may be a rope at the end of one's life, but let's wait on that as long as we can, shall we?

Hi,
Thank you for that. I discovered that Thomas Makin born Abt 1790 in Ireland married Margaret Livesey 15/2/1819 at St Wilfrids in Preston. So if he did go to Manchester he was back in Preston and stayed there.
