Hi,
I'm looking for Robert Moreton Youd and George Youd who emigrated to New Zealand between 1878 and 1883.
Robert Moreton Youd was born 1846, Cheshire England and appears in the 1871 census with wife Eliza. Eliza died in Cheshire in 1878. Robert then appears having children with wife "Annie" from 1883 onwards in New Zealand.
Robert's brother George was born 1855 in Cheshire, England. He is in the 1871 England census but not 1881 and appears having children from 1883 onwards in New Zealand with wife "May".
I've checked some online passenger lists but can't find when they went to New Zealand (or did they go via somewhere else?) and can't see either of their marriages.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to research?
Thanks
Caicos

Hi
Not sure if you have already seen these...
ARCHWAY, appearsd to have entries for both Robert and George and both of their wives. Looks like "May" was in actual fact, Alice May.
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/Home.do
Both women appear to ben interred in Purewa Cemetery (Alice May 1908, Annie 1969)

Wow! What a quick response.
Thank you Lu and Althea!
I couldn't find either marriage on http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/Home/ so that marriage is a bonus.
Thank you both again,
Caicos

No wonder I couldn't find it!
I've seen lots of mistranscriptions but there doesn't seem to be a wildcard or soundex search. I wonder what George is indexed as!
Interesting to see the bankruptcy record for George, thanks to all for the links and extra information.

Hi Althea
WOW ! Clever you ... well done ! :)
Found Robert's marriage on the CD ... but nothing for George (even using soundex ... and a few other "tricks")
Hmmm ... puzzling.

Hi Caicos
FOUND
Burial for Robert (1900) is also at Purewa Cemetery (plot, alongside of Annie's)
... BUT ... is listed on the cemetery database as "YOND" !
(Cheers to Althea again ... for giving us the YOND spelling :))

... Caicos, when you take a look at Robert's cemetery record at Purewa, you'll see a listing for a 1 year old child (d. 1901) Catherine Vanessa YOND. (She is buried in the same cemetery location - different plot - but possibly related ?)

1893 Electoal roll George
Electorate Waipawa Voting Qualification Residential
Residential Address Kumeroa Occupation Storekeeper
and ?a double entry
Electorate Hawkes Bay Voting Qualification Residential
Residential Address Kaikora North Occupation Storekeeper
MAY
Surname YOUD Given Name May
Number 3992 Electorate Hawkes Bay
Voting Qualification Residential Residential Address Kaikora North
Occupation Domestic duties
makes you wonder whether he could have gone to Aus and married
Burial records or death cert look at this stage only way to solve riddle of her surname which would at least make search easier
Bye

--- Hmmm .... Historical ... (or "Hysterical") online listings ?
(Whatever ... we sure get some funny results). :D
Here you are Caicos ...
From the online Historical Indexes
Deaths 1900 - Robert Moreton YOND 1900/641
Deaths 1901 - Catherine Vanessa YOUD 1901/3612
(spelt as YOND on Purewa Cem. listing)
[Just can't find the birth of Catherine YOUD ] ???

Mmmm ... again ?
Just looking at marriages for YOUD & YOND.
Harold George YOND } year 1918
Alice May SIMPSON } (Source: NZSG Marriages CD)
I'd be inclined to think that the 1969 cemetery record (Purewa) for an "Alice May YOUD", is very likely to be that of Alice May - wife of Harold George ??
Lu
* Am assuming Harold George YOND (above) is the same person as >>
BIRTH (from online index)

Thanks to all of you so much for the extra information.
They are a bit of a branch to my main family so I didn't want to go to the expense of a certificate - just finding out where they disappeared to has been a bonus, especially with all the information you have found for me.
I really appreciate your help with this,
Caicos

Just to update this thread, the marriage of George YOUD and May GREEN has now been found - 1882 in Adelaide, Australia.
Thanks again for all the help, I'm marking this as complete.

I was just looking around and see you did a search for Youds to NZ, My great Grand father was George Youd, his first child Claudine was my Great Grandmother. I have struggled to find anything about them, my mum has a cousin who remembers George yYoud, My Granddad died last year, and because his father died before he was born 1919 epidemic, much of the family history was lost.
Did you find anything of interest other than what links are on the chat?
