I have been researching my ancesrtry when I can for over a year and have traced over 250 however I have come to a complete stanstill with regard to my Grandfather
HERBERT WOOD b 1883 Aston Under Line Lancashire
Married in 1907 to NANCY NORBURN b 1883 Standish Lancashire
Herbert was a Miner Huywer (unsure what this is) and died at the age of 47 leaving Nancy to bring up her six children before she died in 1937 at the age of 54
We believe that HERBERTS mother was MARY WOOD born in Ireland whith no known father although there is a story about the Black and Tans
Any help with this would be fantastic
Regards
Daveey

Ashton Under line, if you leave the h out it may bring up something else. Standish is an area near Bury,. The enumerator has probably mis-spelled HEWER this means he literally hewed coal from the coalface. Hope this helps a bit . Viktoria

Hi Daveey,
I'm just cross referencing this thread with the other one:

You have done very well up to now collecting all your ancestors - this one is tricky with the name Wood.
Just to say that the Black and Tans were much later than Herbert's birth - 1920s. Mary perhaps just came to live in England as a result of the poverty in Ireland after the famine etc.
I just looked Nancy Norburn up in 1901 and got a bit excited when I saw a couple of people called Wood with them :o However, looking further her mother was Ellen Wood I think and Alice and Thomas Wood are Ellen's mother and brother ::)
I have posted re Herbert on the other thread too.
Dotty is right re Standish - I don't think there is one near Bury (there is a Stand).

Sorry, I "stand "corrected if you will excuse the pun--it is Stand near Bury and Standish near Wigan. Hope this did not cause you any extra work. Viktoria

;D ;D
I'm sure it didn't Viktoria. It took me a while to realise that you perhaps meant Stand.
I think I've gone to town a bit on this but hope that Daveey understands - I suppose it all depends on what info he has re Herbert.
goodnight
