I am looking for James Charles RUSSELL born approx 1800. He qualified as a surgeon (and possibly apothecary). London is the only place I have. He emigrated to Tasmania and married there 1833/4. I have checked the death and there is no listing of place of birth.
Thanks.

Hi Zenobia,
I don't have any of these occupations in my own family (though we have doctors and pharmacists on my mum's side in France), but thought it would be interesting to try to help you find some information.
I tried the historical directories, but nothing came up on the keyword search there. Here is the site, just in case you get a more specific location for James Charles, later on:
www.historicaldirectories.org
I have found this, though, and personally this would be direction I might choose myself, as if you can find an apprenticeship record, then you might find a father's name and even a baptism:

I do hope this helps. I'd be interested to know if it does help, Zenobia.
Kind regards + good luck.

Dear Paulene,
Thanks for your help. I had a look but couldn't find anything.
Have bookmarked the sites you gave and will check them out on a regular basis.
Once again, thanks

Hi Zenopobia,
As we haven't managed to find anything yet, I thought I'd put his name in the search on the National Archives Site:
www.rootschat.com/links/05uw
I put the name James Charles Russell in, but nothing came up. However, some things (will + details of insurance) came up for the name James Russell. Then I tried putting in Charles Russell, and a will came up, too.
Now these might not be connected to your James Charles Russell; but working on the possibility of passing down family names and occupations (both surgeons + one (insurance holder) an apothecary, too) they might just be worth looking at.
If the will show any connections, at least they might help pinpoint areas to search, etc.
Good luck - hope you do find something.

Plus, a little to tell you about the fire insurance records:

http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/
- has some early hits for James Charles Russell.
He does, in 1839, appear to use the title "MRCS of London" = member of the Royal College of Surgeons of London.
searching for "J. C. Russell" pulls up some ads for leeches!
If he was a MRCS and not a FRCS, the Royal College of Surgeons themselves don't generally have much.

- includes some suggestions for sources, including those in Australia.

- some details about him in Australia. Other than "MRCS 1832" there doesn't seem to be much on him. He may be found in (English) newspaper lists of those passing the exams to join the RCS - I will look for you later.
